Dolly Parton Announces New Christmas Movie to Release in November

By Cooper Dowd, Staff Writer

Dolly Parton, country music legend and star of the Netflix original series DOLLY PARTON’S HEARTSTRINGS, plans to team up with Netflix again for an upcoming Christmas movie.

The award-winning music artist is set to star in and produce a holiday-themed musical called CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE. Debbie Allen, who directed GREY’S ANATOMY, will direct the movie, which will include actors Christine Baranski, Jenifer Lewis, Treat Williams, and Jeanine Mason. Parton announced that the musical is set to premiere Nov. 22 on her Instagram, initially teasing the new project as an album.

“#ChristmasOnTheSquare is more than just a song…” Parton shared with her followers on Instagram. “It’s also a musical! Watch my newest movie, directed by @therealdebbieallen and starring Christine Baranski, @jeniferlewisforreal and so many other talented folks…”

Although the country icon can claim over 25 number ones on the Hot Country Songs list, Parton also recently held the top spot on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart for the first time in her career.

Movieguide® reported:

The song that reached the number one spot is a duet with Christian rocker Zach Williams titled “There Was Jesus.”

“Having a No. 1 record at any time is a great thing, but having a No. 1 faith-based record during these crazy times is even greater,” Parton told Billboard. “I feel humbled and blessed to be part of this wonderful song with Zach Williams. It does my heart good to know that we have touched the lives of so many people.”

In addition to her performances on stage as a musical artist, Parton also took her talents to television as a Netflix show producer of DOLLY PARTON’S HEARTSTRINGS. The series received an outstanding review from Movieguide® for its Christian themes and uplifting content and was awarded the Faith & Freedom Award® for Television at the 2020 Movieguide® awards.
