Discovery’s GOLD RUSH Star Rick Ness Wants ‘Redemption’

By Cooper Dowd, Staff Writer

Rick Ness the gold mining star of Discovery’s most-watched series, GOLD RUSH, said that despite worldwide shutdowns, he was eager to tackle the challenge of mining for gold during the pandemic. In fact, he wants to redeem it.

“I had one goal in mind and that was redemption, and it would have been nice if everybody hadn’t been affected by COVID, and I’d had a full shot at it. But at that point, it didn’t matter,” Ness said. “Redemption was all that was on my mind and I wasn’t going to take no for an answer. I was going after it.”

In March, the U.S. economy dropped drastically. However, gold prices spiked to record highs, and fuel prices–the primary expense for gold miners–grew cheaper.

“This spring was one of the most frustrating parts of my life. I mean, I was at home, here in Brookfield, Wisconsin. I haven’t been home in April in nine years since I started doing this and it was just bizarre. And the gold prices were going up and fuel prices were just way down. That’s like the magic formula for my business. And so, to say it was frustrating is putting it mildly,” Ness recalled.

Much of the struggle is recorded in the new season of GOLD RUSH. Ness, a fan favorite, says he and the other miners show the reality of what happened to their livelihoods when the pandemic hit. Their story is not without hope, though.

“We powered through it and got back to our roots. I think people are going to like what they see. I mean, it’s just a dirty, hard nose kind of a season right here. We didn’t have a whole lot of time, we just had to just smash it out as fast as we could. And hopefully, everybody likes the results.”

The new season of GOLD RUSH is airing now on Discovery.
