Mel Gibson Reportedly Told Britney Spears in 2008: ‘Turn Back to God’

By Movieguide® Staff

After pop star Britney Spears’ public breakdown in 2008, Hollywood director and actor Mel Gibson, known for movies full of faith like HACKSAW RIDGE and THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, reportedly encouraged her to put her faith in God.

Sean Phillip, who was previously Spears’ best friend, recently discussed Spears’ conservatorship and also the story of Gibson’s support.

“I remember Mel Gibson was one of them, telling her that Christianity would save her and to turn back to God,” Phillip told The Sun. “It was all quite surreal.”

Spears recently came out publicly, claiming that the conservatorship under her father, Jamie, was not only unnecessary but controlling.

Movieguide® previously reported:

Spears, 39, started the conservatorship in 2008 after a mental breakdown. But the singer said she is done with the intense therapy sessions and wants to instead rely on God.

“I want my life back!” Spears told a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.

“I want changes going forward. I deserve changes. I was told I have to sit down and be evaluated, again, if I want to end the conservatorship,” Spears said. “Ma’am, I didn’t know I could [contest] the conservatorship. I’m sorry for my ignorance, but I honestly didn’t know that. But honestly, I don’t think I owe anyone to be evaluated.”

Spears said that her former therapist, Dr. Benson, abused her with his treatment. Dr. Benson died in 2019.

“[Dr. Benson] illegally … 100% abused me by the treatment he gave me. And to be totally honest with you, when he passed away, I got on my knees and thanked God.

“I don’t feel like I can live a full life,” she added. “I don’t owe them to go see a man I don’t know and share [with] him my problems. I don’t even believe in therapy. I always think you take it to God. I want to end the conservatorship without being evaluated.”

Movieguide® has honored Gibson’s movies, THE PATRIOT, WE WERE SOLDIERS, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, and HACKSAW RIDGE.
