UNCHARTED, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, has surpassed $225 million in box office totals.

The treasure-hunting adventure movie, based on a Sony Playstation video game beloved by fans, successfully lived up to expectations and has added millions of dollars more to the already overfilling box office coffers.

Pushsquare reports, “The film grossed a further $35 million worldwide this weekend, taking its global total up to $226.4 million overall. This, ultimately, has been a terrific cinematic run for the film, and makes it one of the top grossing video game movie adaptations of all-time.”

Movieguide® previously reported on UNCHARTED’s initial box office boon following its opening weekend:

“This speaks to the health of the market and shouldn’t be overlooked. The marketplace can sustain more than one overperformer,” Erik Lomis, head of United Artists Releasing, said.

UNCHARTED, starring Tom Holland, made $51 million over four days.

This box office bounty is due to creative marketing strategies implemented by Sony and UAR, Deadline reported.

For example, Sony spent close to $20 million on TV spots and partnered with Hyundai for a commercial starring Holland.

UNCHARTED has a scheduled release date of March 14 in Chinese theaters. If the Chinese government allows the movie to play as planned, box office totals could increase exponentially – or fall flat. An article in Variety states:

“…it [UNCHARTED] will instead serve as a vital test of whether or not Chinese moviegoers have any interest in Hollywood product. As of late, the select movies that China’s censors have approved ultimately failed to connect at the box office.”

Lauded by Movieguide® for having “moral messages and Christian and patriotic elements,” UNCHARTED has a strong Christian worldview.

According to Movieguide®’s review:

Nate [Tom Holland] has a strong respect for human life, and his pro-life attitude eventually rubs off on Sully [Mark Wahlberg], giving the movie a redemptive premise. UNCHARTED also has some positive Christian references and elements. The most positive Christian reference is when the main villain’s honorable father tells his ruthless son that his faith and trust is in God, not him, and performs the Sign of the Cross. On the other hand, the plot is driven by thieves stealing from thieves. Nate and Sully must steal the one golden cross to locate the treasure. So, although they don’t try to murder anyone, unlike the other treasure hunters, they aren’t totally pure paragons of moral virtue. However, UNCHARTED contains an excessive number of obscenities and profanities. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong or extreme caution.
