The NFL draft started last night and amid waiting for his name to be called, Hendon Hooker decided to spend his time spreading the Gospel.
Unsure of his draft position because of an ACL tear Hooker sustained at the end of his final Tennessee season, he is holding firm to his foundation in Jesus.
“When I step onto the field, I’m not worried about anything because I’m really playing for an audience of One, and that’s God,” Hooker told Sports Spectrum’s Weekly Saint in December 2021.
“That’s something that the guys in our Bible study and in our community here at Tennessee, it’s something that we pride ourselves in … trying to play for an audience of One and not letting anything else — any outside obstacles — get in the way,” he added.
While in school, Hooker attended Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Hooker would also be the one to lead his teammates in prayer after practices and he often would encourage his teammates in conversations regarding faith.
Similarly, Hooker takes to social media to tell others about Jesus. Both of his Instagram and Twitter bios state, “Giving Him all the Glory.”
Among being a top quarterback, Hooker is also a writer. He and his brother, Alston, created a faith-baith comic book called, “The ABCs of Scripture for Athlete’s.”
“These few scriptures will give athletes or anyone a foundation of God’s word to live in their hearts,” the book’s website reads. “We encourage you to read them repeatedly until they become an extension of your daily conversation as you pursue what you love,” Hooker commented when asked about the comic book.
In addition, Hooker mentioned the big influence in his life, his dad. His dad taught him and his brother how to share Jesus through the game of football.
“I can use the game to get the message out there and spread the Word of Jesus Christ,” Hooker stated.
When Hooker declared for the draft he stated, “I feel like my time here at Tennessee has taught me that when you trust in God and you put the work in, then anything is possible, and that God will always have your back.”
Unsure of where he will land his first professional contract, Hooker knows where his peace lies and that he is not alone.
Hooker threw 27 touchdowns and only two interceptions in his final season at Tennessee. He completed 69.6% of his passes which secured him first-team All-SEC and SEC Player of the Year honors.
