Country Star Mickey Guyton on Career Success: ‘My Faith in God Helped Me’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Country star Mickey Guyton recently shared the important role her faith has played in both her career and her personal life.

Guyton grew up going to church and singing in the choir. When she moved to Nashville to pursue her dream of being a country music singer, she leaned on her faith to help her through any struggles.

“[Faith] was a huge part of my life and always has been, and being in the industry that is so fickle, that is so hard — and especially the angle I took, I really like standing up for people, no matter who it is, anybody that felt marginalized, I’m standing up for them — that comes with a huge responsibility,” the singer explained

She continued, “It was my faith in God that helped me. A lot of the things, that’s my approach, I really believe He was speaking through me because there are some times I would hear interviews and I’m like, ‘I don’t recall saying that.’ So, it was definitely an out-of-body experience sometimes.”

Guyton was named 2022’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year by Time, performed the National Anthem at this year’s Super Bowl, and became the first Black person to be nominated for Best Country Album at the Grammys.

Movieguide® previously reported on her success:

Country singer Mickey Guyton wowed the crowd at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Sunday before the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams faced off in Super Bowl LVI. Six-time Grammy nominee Jhené Aiko opened the evening with a beautiful rendition of “America the Beautiful” before Guyton took the stage.

The country singer’s soaring and emotional rendition of the U.S. national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner” was accompanied by actress Sandra Mae Frank, who performed the song in American Sign Language. Guyton’s stunning vocals were further enhanced by the backing of a diverse choir of supporting singers.

Guyton is the first black solo female artist to earn a Grammy nomination in a country category for the song “Black Like Me” in 2020. She earned three nominations in 2021 for best country solo performance and best country song for “Remember Her Name,” as well as a best country album nod for her full-length debut album of the same name.

Even with all this career success, Guyton says her “beautiful home life” with her husband and 2 year-old son has kept her grounded. The singer worried that the birth of her son would mean slowing down her career, but Guyton said it’s actually brought “so many blessings.”

“I couldn’t stop the opportunities from coming into my life, and I think it was because of my son,” Guyton explained. “God gave me him. He’s such a precious kid, and seeing him smile every day … the world can be crazy around you. But the endorphins you get from just seeing your baby smile — there’s nothing like it. The closest thing to God’s love, in my personal opinion, is our love for our kids. And that grounds me for sure.”

Guyton is now getting ready to hit the road on tour with Shania Twain.

“There’s just a lot of love happening [in country music] and people are getting to see how beautiful the actual community is,” Guyton gushed.
