Clean Comedian Leanne Morgan Lands on Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch List

Clean comedian Leanne Morgan landed on Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch list, recently announced at Just for Laughs Montreal.

Morgan, who originally wanted to be an actor, knew she was funny but never considered a career in comedy, according to Variety.

But she discovered her talent in her 30s while selling jewelry in the Appalachian Mountains where she lived.

“It was my own little comedy club, two or three nights a week. It would be a bunch of women sitting on a couch in somebody’s living room. That influenced how I approached people and did comedy,” she told Variety.

While people in the industry told her she would never make it since she is a wife and mother of three, Morgan proved them wrong, spending her weekends performing comedy, Variety reported.

Her website shares a little more about her career:

“Morgan has garnered over 3M followers across social media and her popular online stand-up special, So Yummy, has reached over 50M views on YouTube. Her fan base continues to grow with her relatability as she discusses everything from being a housewife, sharing Jell-O recipes to having a new grandbaby. Morgan has appeared on NewsHour on PBS,  Today Show on NBC, Sherri, The Kelly Clarkson Show, The View, and Nick at Nite’s Funniest Mom.”

Her focus on clean humor sets her apart from most other comedians. Movieguide® previously reported,

“Fans of Morgan’s comedy love her clean humor and her commitment to avoiding political topics.  ‘I understand how people want to do that and do comedy that way. But I have just never written that way or ever thought that way,’ Morgan explained. ‘Plus, I thought, nobody cares what I think. I want it to be fun. I don’t want anybody to feel uncomfortable….I don’t write that way.’”

Morgan has a comedy special on Netflix and is now touring through the U.S.

Her children are grown, and when she isn’t touring, she spends time with her family in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Movieguide® previously reported on Morgan’s career:

Comedian Leanne Morgan has had the biggest year of her career, with a tour, a Netflix special, an upcoming movie role and a book under her belt.

“I got started [in stand-up comedy] when my baby child was 18 months old and she’s 25, so I’ve been doing comedy for a long time…I had a good career,” Morgan explained. “It was fine. Nobody really knew who I was, but I was out there doing it.”

Her career “boomed in 2019” after clips of her performing went viral online. The internet popularity led to her first tour and a Netflix special.
