How Dolly Parton Controls Anger: ‘Pray Without Ceasing’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Singer-songwriter Dolly Parton recently opened up about how she doesn’t let her anger get the best of her.

“I don’t lose my temper, but I use my temper,” Parton said. “Of course, I’ve lost it a few times, but it’s not that I’m losing my temper, I’m trying to use it because sometimes there are just some people you have to speak up to. Because if they don’t know, especially as a shock, for somebody like me to raise my voice to people, that’s not what they’re used to.”

The singer, who Kelly Clarkson once dubbed “one of the sweetest people you will ever meet,” emphasized that she holds her ground when it comes to things that are important, but she tries not to respond out of anger.

Parton also tries to lean on God for guidance. A Biblical instruction that she applies is “pray without ceasing.”

“Parton…prays a lot, and she tries to put her feelings in the ‘proper places.’” Showbiz Cheat Sheet said.

People reported that Parton said she “gets angry if ‘someone’s messing with my family or messing with my work,’ and at a certain point, the people around her will know how she’s feeling.”

Showbiz Cheat Sheet reported, “People point out how easygoing she is, so they assume she doesn’t get angry. When people ask Parton if she gets mad, she says she does, just like everyone else. ‘Of course, I get mad,’ says Parton…’I’m a living, human being.’”

“Parton says everyone gets angry, but what matters most is how that anger is channeled,” Showbiz Cheat Sheet reported.

Movieguide® previously covered Parton’s outlook on God’s work in her life:

Parton is candid about her faith in God and said that she knew to follow God’s plan for her life from a young age…

“…I believe that I was supposed to do something good…I never let go of that because I always felt responsible to God that I was supposed to be doing something for God. And so I still feel like that. And I’m still doing it. Trying to,” she added.

Despite Parton’s fame and awards in almost every area of entertainment, she held on to her faith in God.

“I really feel like I have a calling,” Parton said. “I feel like God had told me early on in a feeling that I was supposed to go till He told me to stop and He [hasn’t] said nothing yet about quitting. And so I ain’t said nothing about retiring yet.”
