Tim Allen had some fun welcoming three former cast members to his new show as they attempted to enter their old studio while looking for SHIFTING GEARS.
“Hey, what are you doing? Wrong set!” Allen yelled to Patricia Richardson, Debbe Dunning and Richard Karn as they attempted to enter their old studio for HOME IMPROVEMENT in a fun TikTok. “SHIFTING GEARS, it’s over here. Come on, keep it moving, people. Let’s go. Come on. Ok. Keep it moving.”

The TikTok was a fun way for Allen to welcome his old castmates back as they guest star on SHIFTING GEARS. While their roles on the show have been kept under wraps, they will appear on the season premiere episode on Oct. 1 and offer Allen’s character, Matt, some “unexpected support.”
The season as a whole has received similar treatment with ABC offering few clues as to where the show is headed now that Kat Dennings’ character, Riley, has finalized her decision to divorce her husband. Dennings, however, previously shared her thoughts on how the show could progress.
“I hope we see Riley do some exploration of who she is now because she doesn’t really know who she is now without her ex-husband relationship and back living at home as a mom and two kids and have her discover her personality without the things that she is used to. I think that would be cool,” she said in March.
“I think the beauty of this is that I can conceive [multiple seasons of the show],” she later told Deadline. “[Riley] might end up there for five seasons or maybe in Season 3 she does move out. Who knows. [My brother on the show] is in the military and will come in hopefully in future seasons. And then there’s that whole dynamic with who he is. Where’s he going to live? So there could be just unlimited ways to go with this. I’m really looking forward to that.”
Regardless, the show is likely to keep its family-friendly tone, as Allen and his castmates have shared their commitment to keeping it something kids can enjoy with their parents. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
The pilot episode of SHIFTING GEARS teaches strong positive values. It stresses the importance of family, love, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Also, father uses an overt winsome reference to Jesus when discussing life with his teenage grandson. Despite their differences, the grandfather and his daughter still love each other and want the best for one another. They also bond over the loss of their wife/mom and remember her as a remarkable woman who kept the family together. However, the pilot episode of SHIFTING GEARS has some relatively light foul language and other issues. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
With this little teaser, fans are more excited than ever to see these actors back on screen together and find out who Richardson, Dunning and Karn will play in the SHIFTING GEARS world.
