More Detail:
The Battle of Bushy Run takes place after the British defeated the French in 1763. The French leave America, but the Indian tribes fear revenge from the British. In preemptive strikes, the tribes lay siege on all British forts and villages. The battle must be won in order for the English colonies to survive. LOVE & COURAGE has some war-related violence, kidnapping and separation of families; so, caution is advised for older children.
The British colonies celebrate their victory over the French at the conclusion of the French and Indian War of 1754-1763. The war resulted in countless deaths to British, French and American Indian populations. Nevertheless, claiming their victory, many British military leaders put down their defenses and make plans to return to Britain. Many believe the French and Indian War is the end of all wars in the colonies.
However, one Colonel, Henry Bouquet, suspects otherwise. He gets accounts of Indian tribes attacking British forts and villages, brutally killing even those who were once friends. These surprise attacks prove successful and leave the British extremely vulnerable, without adequate defense. A few subsequent dismal reports are sent from Fort Pitt. The situation is dire because the tribes, led by Chief Pontiac, surround the fort after the initial attack, which killed many British soldiers.
Colonel Bouquet signs up to lead an army, comprised of some untrained Brits, a few Scottish Highlanders and American volunteers, to save Fort Pitt. He reasons that, if Fort Pitt falls, it threatens the existence of all 13 colonies.
Like many others, Colonel Bouquet had previously hoped his war days were behind him. He’s built a solid courtship with his beloved Anne Willing. Reluctantly, he resigns himself to the inevitable. He explains to Anne that he must go to war once again.
Bouquet and his army engage in hand-to-hand combat with the Natives at Fort Pitt. Both sides suffer great loss. However, the British soldiers are out-strategized. They’re surrounded, with no means to get food or water. Bouquet creates a brilliant, but also risky, battle plan. There is little chance of success. If he fails, the troops will be captured and tortured. Bouquet pens a goodbye letter to Anne. He thanks her for the gift of love which has made his life complete.
Faced with almost certain death, or worse, the British and American soldiers bravely decide to press on to fight the most dangerous battle of their lives at Bushy Run.
