Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker paid tribute to the late Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated Wednesday afternoon after sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck at an event in Utah.
Butker shared a screenshot of a text thread between him and Kirk. On Oct. 16, Kirk sent Butker the Bible verse Philippians 3:14: “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
“Thank you for your strong witness for Christ, Charlie,” the kicker wrote in the caption. “Thank you for pursuing truth and leading your family as a husband and father. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
Since Kirk’s death, his fans, friends, followers and those whose lives he impacted have flooded social media with tributes and remembrances of the conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder.

“We’ll think about you on every college campus we visit. Your life will be a tremendous motivator to reach more for Christ,” evangelist Stuart Knechtle wrote. “You spoke about God for 15 minutes today, right before the tragedy. That’s what you were about. Thank you for your friendship, your encouragement, your love for Erika, the kids, and humanity. Thank you for always saying ‘God, family, nation…in that order!’ Love you, man, now and till we meet again.”
NBA star Jonathan Isaac shared, “My friend and Brother In Christ..Welcome home! Your dedication to Christ and Democracy will never be forgotten! Prayers up for your beautiful family and close friends.”
Kirk, who was 31, lived his life for Christ.
In a now viral video, he shared what he wanted to be remembered for, and it wasn’t for his great speeches or events.
“If I die? I want to be remembered for courage for my faith. That would be the most important thing. Most important is my faith in my life,” he declared.
That is exactly what Kirk he is being remembered for. A true pioneer in the advancement of the gospel, Kirk was never ashamed to share his opinion on political matters or, more importantly, to share his faith in Jesus Christ.
“Jesus defeated death so you can live,” Kirk posted to X just last week.
Kirk is now with God in heaven, and he leaves behind his wife, Erika, and two children. Pray for the entire Kirk family and all those affected by this terrible tragedy.
