For the creative team behind THE TERMINAL LIST, the military camaraderie seen onscreen reflects their own real-life relationships.

“We would not be sitting here were it not for Jared Shaw,” Jack Carr, author of the book the hit Amazon Prime show is based on, told PEOPLE.

Shaw, a former Navy SEAL, left the military after serving for 11 years as a sniper and breacher in the Middle East. He decided not to re-enlist after his final tour but was a little unsure of what his next chapter would be.

“We have this thing in SEAL training about never quitting, so some people thought if you got out, it was kind of a black mark,” Carr explained. “But [Shaw] was a good guy in the SEAL team and I wanted to help with his transition out. That’s what we owe these guys.”

Shaw added, “He took me under his wing when he didn’t really know me, when I didn’t have anybody in my chain of command helping me, connecting me to people in the outside world.”

Carr put Shaw in touch with some friends of his that ran a shooting school. From there, Shaw began working as a stuntman on movies like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 and JURASSIC WORLD — in a strange twist of fate, he and actor Chris Pratt became friends after Pratt shadowed Shaw during his SEAL days in preparation for his role in ZERO DARK THIRTY.

A few years later, it was Shaw’s turn to lend Carr a helping hand. Carr had just finished the manuscript for what would become THE TERMINAL LIST and wanted his old friend to look it over.

Carr had always dreamed of writing a book, telling Military.com, “I always knew I wanted to do these two things in life: one, serve my country in uniform, and two, write thrillers.”

“I had no connections in Hollywood while I’m writing this book,” Carr explained to PEOPLE, joking, “It was funny how I learned there was a connection to Chris Pratt when [Jared] asked if he could show it to Chris and I thought, ‘That is very convenient for me.’”

Pratt optioned the book, and a few years later, the first season of THE TERMINAL LIST premiered. The group behind the show and its spin-off, DARK WOLF, still remain close.

“I think the camaraderie we have within our team is the closest thing to the military I’ve found since getting out,” Shaw shared. “[Carr] taking care of our team, the way [he] took care of me in 2013, is one of the most special things. It’s a blessing.”

The TERMINAL LIST team is hard at work on other projects, including adapting Carr’s book, “Savage Son,” into a feature-length movie.

“We can always do it as a series, but it really lends itself, out of all the books, to a film,” the author told Collider. “So I would love to see us experiment with that and bring something to the big screen.”

Like the characters Carr created and are now brought to life onscreen, the team that brought THE TERMINAL LIST to life are close and supportive friends.
