Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa Declares ‘My Foundation is My Faith’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is putting his faith first as he prepares for the 2023 season and hopes to lead his team to the Super Bowl.

Tagovailoa gained national attention as a high school quarterback, being considered one of the top prospects in the country. He ultimately committed to playing college football at the University of Alabama.

Tagovailoa played for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2017 to 2019. He began as a backup to Jalen Hurts but became widely known during the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship when he led Alabama to a dramatic comeback victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. His performance in that game earned him the nickname “Tua Time.”

After the 2019 season, Tagovailoa decided to forgo his senior year of college eligibility and declared for the draft. He was selected by the Miami Dolphins as the 5th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Before the 2020 NFL Draft, Tagovailoa discussed the importance of his faith in an interview with CBN’s The 700 Club.

“Your foundation is what you’re always going to revert back to,” Tagovailoa said. “For me, my foundation is my faith and my family. You know my faith is what keeps me motivated when I can’t even stay motivated myself. I’m just trying to play football, just trying to be able to take care of my family and be able to use my platform for the right reasons.”

“The greatest gift that God could have given us was His Son. It’s not just a matter of hearing what Jesus Christ is, it’s a matter of getting to know who Jesus Christ is. To really understand and really feel the identity of who you are because of things that He’s done. And I’d say you can only find your identity through Him, if you know Him,” he continued.

Since being drafted by the Dolphins, Tagovailoa has exceeded Miami’s expectations.

However, in December 2022, Tagovailoa experienced a major concussion which caused him to miss the remainder of the season and jeopardized the future of his NFL career.

Despite what the critics said, he returned to football and recently began his 2023 season.

However, Tagovailoa isn’t just a football player. A Hawaiian native, he also has raised nearly $100,000 with his foundation for Maui, Hawaii, after multiple wildfires destroyed much of the island.

On the Tua Foundation fundraising page, Tagovailoa wrote, “In the wake of the Maui wildfires, our community needs us more than ever. With the strength of our ‘Ohana and the deep-rooted values of Aloha, let’s lend a helping hand to those in need. Stand with me in showing that the Aloha spirit is unbreakable. 100% of all donations will go directly to support those affected in Hawaii.”

Tagovailoa plays for an “Audience of One” or AO1, as many athletes coined the phrase. In a photo he shared on X (formerly Twitter) in a Dolphins jersey, he wrote, “For the Audience of 1.”

Tagovailoa is ready and excited to lead his team through another NFL season with his sights set on a Super Bowl and spreading the Gospel by playing for an “Audience of One.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Tagovailoa’s head injuries:

NFL players and fans are keeping Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in their prayers after he suffered a serious neck and head injury during Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

In the second quarter of the game, Tagovailoa was slammed to the ground after getting sacked by Bengals player Josh Tupou. The player hit the back of his head and his hands and arms immediately started seizing.

Tagovailoa laid on the field for ten minutes before getting lifted off the field with a stretcher. He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and before the end of the game, a Dolphins spokesperson said he was “conscious” and “had movement in all his extremities.”
