DC Universe architect James Gunn revealed that filming has begun on the SUPERMAN sequel, SUPERMAN: MAN OF TOMORROW, as it eyes a Summer 2027 release.

“From the set of #ManofTomorrow. Shooting now,” Gunn wrote on an Instagram post featuring a picture of a chessboard and a prison badge for Lex Luthor.

Luthor will serve as an integral part to the movie as Superman is forced to team up with his nemesis to face a threat that endangers both of their existences: the ultra-smart Brainiac. The story requiring Superman to team up with another in order to achieve his goal lines up with Gunn’s vision for the entire franchise.

“When I started reading comics, I was 3 or 4 years old — I learned to read through comics,” Gunn explained last summer. “I wasn’t entering a world where I’m seeing Superman landing in a spaceship, just him alone among a bunch of human beings. I was seeing a world where Superman had superhero friends and he had a Superman family, and there were robots and giant monsters and he had a flying dog and technology so extreme, it seemed like sorcery.”

“I wanted to bring that world to the screen,” he added. “I thought that would be fun in a different way, while also focusing on a Superman that’s a little more personal and a little bit more flawed, that has a personal struggle about the way he’s looking at himself throughout this movie.”

This approach certainly connected with audiences during its first installment as SUPERMAN grossed over $600 million at the global box office. Along with a more grounded hero, the movie also featured a moral story, which earned it a nomination for the Best Mature Audience Movie at this year’s Movieguide® Awards. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

Writer/Director James Gunn packs SUPERMAN with lots of exciting physical and emotional jeopardy. The movie also has some funny moments. Also, some heartfelt content is morally uplifting. However, the movie changes Superman’s origin story in a significant way that destroys the original story’s biblical allusions to Moses and Jesus. Also, it creates a politically correct pro-immigration theme. Ironically, the movie contradicts this by showing that it’s Superman’s American, non-immigrant parents who make Superman a good guy. SUPERMAN has scary action violence, multiple obscenities and two gratuitous strong profanities.

Gunn has made it clear that the new DC Universe will feature a variety of genres and ways to tell stories. However, he will remain at the helm of Superman’s story, and audiences will hopefully receive an encore of what made the first movie so successful when SUPERMAN: MAN OF TOMORROW releases in July 2027.
