NCIS’s Nick and Jess toned down their relationship earlier this season, but recent episodes made it clear the agents have undeniable feelings for each other.

One of their last missions showed the partners hiding out in a cave, where they huddled close together to preserve body heat. There was definitely some romantic tension.

“I think they’re just leaving the door cracked,” Wilmer Valderrama, who plays Nick, told TVLine. “Look, I think we throw a drop of blood in the water, and we see it bubble up. We might follow the breadcrumbs into a storyline.”

“But I think we try to kind of play with all those themes. Because when you work with people for this long, there are these things that happen, you know, and it’s very normal,” he added.

He said a romance might make for good TV, but it could really go either way with him and Jess.

Katrina Law, who plays Jess, said, “I think the writers have done a beautiful job of setting it up that anything is possible. I think each character has their thoughts of what may happen, but that’s kind of the beauty of it. You don’t know what’s going to happen, or what random situation could pop up.”

If romance did blossom again, then she predicts a fight will occur between Nick and her ex, Jimmy Palmer.

Diona Reasonover, who plays Kasie, said she has a new name for the three of them: “Nick at Knight in Shining Palmer.”

“We always insist on everything being truthful to the moment,” showrunner Steven D. Binder said. “The things people say are real. The feelings they have are real.”

“Sometimes life is messy, and sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants. I’m not saying that we’re writing toward anything, but you could see Jess and Nick having a little crush on each other and knowing it’s horrible and icky and gross and they don’t want to do it, because of Jimmy and her sister…But maybe they do.”

He stressed that the writers aren’t going in that direction, but they aren’t avoiding it either.

“We’re not teasing,” he said. “The feelings are real, and we’re not gonna shy away from that.”

Brian Dietzen, who plays Jimmy Palmer, talked about Jimmy’s confusion and feelings for Jess last December.

“I think a lot of people could watch this show and not even see that there’s something going there. It is kind of simmering below the surface. And me as an actor, Brian, I don’t really know what’s going to happen either,” he explained.

Collider’s Rachel LaBonte criticizes the romance, as it has other romantic storylines going on—especially in NCIS: ORIGINS.

She said “Jimmy and Torres have a nice friendship, and making them romantic rivals would sully that. The same is true for Knight and Torres; their relationship turning romantic could feel too similar to Tony and Ziva, or even Torres and Bishop. Right now, there’s still time for NCIS to reverse course on this storyline and take a better approach to its romantic possibilities.”

The next NCIS episode comes out on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
