‘This Book Is Alive’: Priscilla Shirer Shares ‘Five P’s Of Bible Study’

WAR ROOM star Priscilla Shirer is sharing the Bible study method that helps her connect with God’s word.
“I want to share with you what I call The Five P’s of Bible study,” she said in a video for TBN.
The first P? Position yourself to hear from God.
“There is power in your positioning,” she explained. “When you make that commitment to position yourself…the position of your heart needs to be in a frame of reference that is eager to hear and expects to hear the voice of God speaking.”
The next P — “Pour over the passage and paraphrase the major points,” the OVERCOMER actress said. “When I say ‘pour,’ I mean to meditate on it. To read it, not just once, but twice. To read it in two or three different translations.”
“Pull out the Spiritual principles,” Shirer said next. “This is where I prayerfully look at those [verses], and I look to see what spiritual principles [are there]. What is it that the verse says [and now I’m asking] what does the verse mean?”
The fourth P is to pose the questions.
“This is where you turn the spiritual principle you just pulled out and turn it into the form of a personally directed question,” she said. “When you start asking honest and authentic questions of the text, you will find that the Holy Spirit starts giving you the answers.”
Lastly, “Plan obedience and pin down the date. We plan for everything except honoring God. Whatever it is God’s asked you to do, make a plan,” Shirer explained.
“This book is alive,” she concluded. “The Holy Spirit makes it so that He shines a spotlight in the place where we most need to be fed, where we need guidance and direction, so that God’s present word leaps up off the page and gives us exactly what we need for the circumstances we are facing right now.”
Shirer, who appeared in Movieguide® Award winners OVERCOMER and WAR ROOM, discussed The Five P’s in her book, “Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan to Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer.”
“We’re on a battlefield,” she said. “The enemy is out to keep us from living in God’s will, to keep us from being obedient. You and I have got to be equally strategic about how it is that we’re going to do what it is God is calling us to do.”
Shirer often talks about figuring out when God is speaking to us.
In her book “Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When God Speaks,” she wrote, “Creating time, space, and opportunity to hear God is paramount for those of us who desire to sense His Spirit’s conviction, to receive His detailed guidance, and to discern His intimate leading.”

“There’s the conviction, you know, the conviction of the Holy Spirit, that green light of ease and peace that says go. That yellow light of warning and uneasiness that says hold up a minute till you get clarity. And then that red light that is a straight-up no, there’s no peace, there’s confusion, there’s dissension,” Shirer shared. “That’s the Holy Spirit’s way of telling you no; don’t go there; there’s a better yes for you if you’ll just wait and be patient.”
Matt Crouch, one of PRAISE’s hosts, asked Shirer about the importance of discerning God’s word is important. She wisely replied, “This facet of our faith is what separates our faith from every other so-called faith on the face of the earth—that our God lives. He’s alive, and he speaks to us. We have an actual relationship with him.”
