49ers QB Brock Purdy Says Following Jesus Makes ‘Life Worth Living’

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy explained that faith in Jesus, not fame or success, makes life worth living.
In a video for Sports Spectrum, the quarterback discussed how his mindset needed to change after he landed his role in the NFL.
“I didn’t want to grip on to this life of, ‘My gosh, I’m in the NFL. I have a starting quarterback role. I can’t lose it,'” he began. “That was flipped. I was reminded, you know, of what Jesus told us thousands of years ago in terms of don’t try to hold on to your life. You’re going to lose it, you know, and the world wants you to go this way or that way.”
Purdy’s belief comes from Matthew 16:24-26, which reads:
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?
“And the minute you have fame and if you’re trying to chase status and money and all this kind of stuff, you’ll lose your life rather that, you know, denying yourself, picking up your cross,” Purdy said. “Keeping my eyes on Jesus and His promises. And through that, like that’s life and that’s a life worth living. And that’s how you save your life. And that’s in Christ.”
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins shares Purdy’s conviction. Movieguide® reported:
…“there’s a difference between being a fan of Jesus and being a follower of Jesus,” Cousins recalled. “And then to be a disciple – a follower – is to be fully devoted. And to be fully devoted means that you’re putting in work, that you’re wanting to grow, that you’re making sacrifices, and that when culture goes one way and Jesus goes the other, you got to go with Jesus. Even if that costs you something.”
The quarterback continued, “And we were challenged to ask ourselves, ‘Are you prepared to follow Jesus even when it costs you something?’ Even when all your friends in high school or college on a Friday night are gonna go do one thing, you know that to follow Jesus you got to go another way. Are you gonna do that? Or are you gonna go with your friends?”
“And I made that decision at about 16 or 17 years old. I said, ‘You know what, I think I’m going to follow Jesus even when it costs me something.’ And that’s when you’re truly giving Him your life because you’re really now sacrificing something to follow Jesus,” he said.
In the divisional round of the playoffs, the 49ers faced the Green Bay Packers, the youngest team in the NFL.
While the Packers led most of the game, the 49ers landed a 24-21 victory.
Per CBS Sports, Brock Purdy led “a 12-play, 69-yard scoring drive that Christian McCaffrey, who finished with 98 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, punctuated with a six-yard touchdown run with 1:07 left in the game. Purdy finished with 252 passing yards and a touchdown on 23 of 39 passing.”
Purdy and the 49ers will face the Detroit Lions, fresh from their win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on Jan. 28.
