DC Universe Will ‘Have a Lot of Differences’ from Marvel

If you’re a superhero fan, there is much to look forward to in the DC Universe.

DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran recently shared their plans for the DCU’s future with Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav.

“I’ve had a glimpse into what James and Peter are doing, and it really does serve as an exciting indicator of where the new DC is headed under their leadership,” Zaslav shared. “There’ll be more you’ll hear from them in the months ahead…We’ll have James and Peter take you through in the next few months a full spectrum of what they see over the next 10 years.”

In a press event in January, Gunn explained how the vision for DC is not like Marvel, as some might expect.

“A lot of people think it’s going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences,” Gunn explained. “We are telling a big, huge, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we’re a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we’ve gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we’re also creating a universe that is like STAR WARS, where there’s different times, different places, different things, or GAME OF THRONES, where characters are a little bit more morally complex.”

Last week, Gunn shared a photo on Instagram of the upcoming SUPERMAN: LEGACY cast after a table read.

“After the table read with the #Superman cast. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy, The Engineer all together for the first time! What a wonderful day,” he wrote.

SUPERMAN: LEGACY is set to release July 11, 2025, and will mark the beginning of DC’s new move forward.  Yahoo Movies reported, “Although SUPERMAN: LEGACY will be preceded on the small screen by CREATURE COMMANDOS and WALLER, the movie is considered as the true starting point for the new DCU.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Gunn’s plans for the DCU:

After taking over as head of the DC Universes, James Gunn recently explained what will and will not be considered canon in the future.

The Gunn-led DCU will officially begin when SUPERMAN: LEGACY is released in 2025. However, some fans wonder what the takeover will mean for previous DC projects.

Gunn explained that projects including THE BATMAN and JOKER movies and their sequels will be exempt from his DC Universe. DC video games also “do not all have to be canon to the shared universe of the films,” per CBR.

This may be disappointing for some fans who will feel like upcoming releases like JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX and THE BATMAN PART II will go to waste as they have no bearing on the Universe’s future.
