Chip Gaines’ Dad Talks Providing for Your Family: ‘Do What It Takes’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Chip Gaines is kicking off a new YouTube series with a conversation with his dad about work ethic and “get[ting] the job done” for your family.

“I want to start a process of having conversations with folks on the porch and allowing it to be just a safe, relaxed place where people can express different views, different perspectives, different opinions,” Gaines told his dad, Bob, in the video. “And you kept popping up at the top of the list.”

Bob explained that his mother left their family when he was 5 years old, which quickly created a self-reliant streak.

“What I learned at a very young age is if you wanted something, you better go out and earn the money to get it,” he said. “I’ve always been a grinder. Just go, grind it out, make it happen.”

Bob shared some of the jobs he picked up along the way, including playing semi-pro football and managing a restaurant. After growing restless working for someone else, he enlisted a friend to help him invest in an embroidery business, which led to his successful career as a businessman.

He also spoke about how his family experiences influenced how he raised his own family.

“The vow was, I’m not going to have a family that looks like the one I grew up in,” Bob said, explaining that his father had alcohol abuse problems and that the family often struggled to put food on the table.

He continued, “There’s a lot of angry men out there, and they’re angry for the same reason I was angry; they didn’t have any kind of upbringing, [or] the kind of role model that a father would bring into their lives.”

“I get that,” Bob said. “But you have got to decide at some point in time: I’m going to be a victim the rest of my life, or I’m going to go out, and I’m going to do what it takes to get the job done for my family.”

Gaines’ father’s work ethic clearly rubbed off on his son. The FIXER UPPER star is always hard at work on new renovation projects, as well as work for he and wife Joanna’s Magnolia Network. The couple always prioritizes family time, though.

“It’s prioritizing, always waking up every morning and understanding what is your priority,” Joanna told PEOPLE. “For us, it’s obviously our relationship, and then our family and our children.”

Chip said something similar in a 2017 interview, explaining that their family was the reason he and Joanna chose to end FIXER UPPER.

“For us, the most important thing in the world is Jo and I’s relationship, followed very quickly by the four beautiful kids [of ours],” he said. “We didn’t want to push it, to redline [our show] for so long that we woke up and realized we are at a point of no return. We wanted to take a step back and focus on what is absolutely the most important thing to us.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Gaines’ thoughts on family and fatherhood:

Gaines spoke about one of the most valuable things parenthood has taught him, stating, “one of the biggest things I’ve learned is how not to be selfish. Caring about someone else more than you care about yourself. And it’s made me a better team player.” The FIXER UPPER star continued, “I love watching my kids grow up and try new things. Whether they succeed or fail, just to be their cheerleader on the sideline is the best feeling.”

Chip spoke at length about his wife Joanna and her partnership in raising their five children. “To be married to her and raising kids together has been the honor of my life,” Gaines beamed. “I tell my kids this a lot: She’s the one that makes this whole thing go around.” Their kindness and family values have even spread into the secular realms of the media, earning the pair a spot on Time magazine’s Top 100 Influential People of 2019.
