‘Be Better and Grow Bigger’: Cineworld CEO Shows Off New 4DX Theater

By Movieguide® Contributor

Cineworld CEO Eduardo Acuna recently showed off the company’s latest project — the world’s largest 4DX auditorium.

“We needed to open this. We had already put so much money into it. I can tell you that it was significantly more than we expected. It was significantly over budget. But I also don’t regret it. I think we needed to go big here,” Acuna said of the newly renovated Regal Times Square theater.

He continued, “Times Square is so perfect for these types of auditoriums. Because you have all these tourists walking around, and they’re like, ‘Oh, I’ve never seen this. We don’t have this in my hometown.’ It’s almost like going to a theme park.”

The 4DX theater features technology like “immersive audio, motion, environmental effects like water, wind and lightning,” according to IMDb. “It’s the biggest 4Dx auditorium in the word with 296 seats, more than double the average, 60-foot screens, fog machines and rainstorm fans.”

Acuna took control of Cineworld following the company’s 2022 bankruptcy filing. Movieguide® previously reported:

Regal Cinemas plans to shut down 39 movie theaters across the country to save $22 million per year and avoid bankruptcy.

The theater chain is owned by Cineworld, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last September. They received $1.94 billion in bankruptcy loans and have been putting together a plan to recover from their financial hardships.

Part of that plan is to close 39 Regal theaters, effective February 15.

“The Debtors are hopeful that these negotiations will lead to lease concessions and modifications that will obviate the need for rejection and enable additional theater sites to remain open,” court documents about the closings read.

Acuna told The Hollywood Reporter that the new theater “shows how much we believe in this industry.”

“We believe customers want a differentiation and a reason to come out of their houses to see movies. So to me this feels really important, this shows how bullish we are for the industry and how we are ready to be better and grow bigger,” he continued.
