James Gunn Changes SUPERMAN: LEGACY Title on First Day of Filming

By Movieguide® Contributor

The new SUPERMAN: LEGACY movie will now be called SUPERMAN, director and scriptwriter James Gunn announced on the movie’s first day on set.

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,’ Gunn wrote in a caption to a photo of what appears to be a close-up of his version of the Superman costume,” Variety reported.

“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film SUPERMAN: LEGACY. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN,” he said. “Making our way to you July 2025.”

Collider reported that PEARL actor David Corenswet will play Clark Kent in the movie, and THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL’s Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult, known for his roles in BEAST and MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, will star as villain Lex Luther.

Gunn shared last month that John Murphy will head the scores for SUPERMAN. He said that the composer has been giving his best efforts, “working tirelessly” to create a great track for the movie.

The SUPERMAN movie will head to theaters on Friday, July 11, 2025, and another DC flick, THE BATMAN: PART II, will premiere in fall 2025.

Cinema Blend reported about THE BATMAN: PART II: “The sequel to the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated hit from 2022 is part of DC Studios’ Elseworlds brand, which was technically already set in motion by the release of JOKER in 2019.”

Movieguide® reported about the future of DC Universe movies on Friday:

DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran recently shared their plans for the DCU’s future with Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav.

“I’ve had a glimpse into what James and Peter are doing, and it really does serve as an exciting indicator of where the new DC is headed under their leadership,” Zaslav shared. “There’ll be more you’ll hear from them in the months ahead…We’ll have James and Peter take you through in the next few months a full spectrum of what they see over the next 10 years.”

…“A lot of people think it’s going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences,” Gunn explained. “We are telling a big, huge, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we’re a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we’ve gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we’re also creating a universe that is like STAR WARS, where there’s different times, different places, different things, or GAME OF THRONES, where characters are a little bit more morally complex.”
