NHL Star Raises $1 Million to Fight Against Human Trafficking: ‘God Has Worked’

Not only is Jaccob Slavin a big asset on the ice for the Carolina Hurricanes, he also serves God as he seeks to end human trafficking.

Slavin and his wife, Kylie, joined forces with the International Justice Mission to raise money for the Fight to Freedom campaign.

Last November, the couple announced the partnership and their goal to raise $1 million.

IJM aims to “protect people in poverty from violence by rescuing victims, bringing criminals to justice, restoring survivors to safety and strength, and helping local law enforcement build a safe future that lasts.”

“That is why we decided to start the Fight for Freedom Campaign,” Kylie explained. “In this campaign, we are hoping to raise $1 million by way of a matching grant, meaning that, up to $500,000, we will personally match every dollar.”

“The money raised in this campaign will specifically go towards fighting against the online sexual exploitation of children in the Philippines,” Jaccob said.

Last month, the couple shared that they met their goal.

“BIG Announcement! Together, we’ve achieved our $1 Million goal in the Fight For Freedom Campaign. With immense thanks to everyone who joined the cause,” they posted on the Fight for Freedom Instagram.

“Kylie and I are so thankful for your generosity,” Jaccob continued. “It’s amazing to see how God has worked through this campaign so far! It’s not done yet!”

“We’ve raised $1,003,795 from 209 donors—proving the strength of our incredible community! Let’s continue making a difference together! Stay tuned for news about a celebration event at the end of the season,” he concluded.

Movieguide® previously reported on Jaccob’s faith:

On Sports Spectrum’s “I Once Was,” Slavin revealed when his faith became his own.

“I was kind of challenged by one of my assistant coaches,” he began. “We’re sitting in the locker room, and he looked at me and said, ‘Jacob, what kind of faith do you have?’ I kind of looked at him, puzzled by the question of like, ‘What are you talking about? I’m Christian.’ He’s like, ‘No, do you have your own personal relationship with Jesus?’ So, I was just being challenged, left and right, to really not rely on my parents’ faith anymore.”

“I had to have my own personal relationship with Jesus at this point and so from that moment I really started understanding what it meant to be a follower of Christ,” he continued. “It wasn’t about works, it wasn’t about anything I do or do not do but it was all about the work of Jesus on the cross.”

Slavin previously shared that Titus 3:7 is his favorite Bible verse. It reads, “so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”

“If you look at that verse, [it] talks about eternal life. He talks about hope, but it also talks about being justified by his grace and what Jesus did on the cross for us,” he said. “It’s not because of anything we can do to earn eternal life. It’s not because of how good of people we are…It’s all because of what Jesus did on the cross. That’s why we’re justified.”
