Danny Gokey: How Putting God First Defends Against Life’s Difficulties

Danny Gokey looked at one of the trickiest parts of the story of Job to explain how putting God first protects us from devastation and helps us find life in any situation.
“If you’ve ever read the book of Job, it can be a very sobering text to read. As a matter of fact, when you see how he loses everything, gets sick, he loses his kids, wife, wealth, and then he can’t figure out why these terrible things were happening to him,” Gokey said. “And then he encounters God, and he sees God in his glory and God restores back another family to him and doubles his wealth.”
“Many people get stuck there because they say, ‘You know what? I don’t want another new family. I want my old family back.’ But there’s something in the story of Job that we all need to catch, and it’s simply this: that God should always be in first place,” he continued. “Many times people put their kids at first place, their spouses at first place, their job at first place, and that’s why life goes upside down and topsy turvy.”
“But Job understood this: as long as I have God, I have everything I need because God gives me the ability to enjoy a wife. God gives me the ability to enjoy a family. God gives me the ability to enjoy wealth,” Gokey explained. “He understood that as long as he has God, the one who created kids, the one who created marriage, the one who created all things perfectly to be enjoyed, that he could enjoy everything even if it wasn’t his first family.”
Gokey challenged his fans to place their joy in the Lord, who allows them to fully enjoy the rich things in life while also enabling them to endure the hardest difficulties they could face.
The message of Job is summarized by Paul in Philippians when he writes, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I knew what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or want. I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”
Jesus exemplified this teaching as well, finding consistency in the Lord rather than swaying based on his popularity with the crowds. Had he not put God first, he would have struggled to not view himself differently when the crowd’s favor was with him or against him.
When we place God above all else in our lives, we can live with the same consistency, finding joy in the Lord rather than in life’s circumstances.

“It’s a reminder that when you’ve got God by your side, you can face whatever comes your way!” he said of the song, per The Christian Beat. “Even when your world is shaking, believing that He is with you & will bring you through. My prayer is that this song encourages you to stand firm in that & keep praising, no matter what!”
