Candace Cameron Bure Talks ‘Heartbreaking’ Abuse in Hollywood

Candace Cameron Bure is heartbroken over the abuse that has come to light in the entertainment industry and is sharing how young actors can protect themselves.

In the wake of the new documentary QUIET ON SET: THE DARK SIDE OF KIDS TV, which shares horrific accounts of sexual abuse that some Nickelodeon actors faced, Bure spoke to Fox News Digital.

“There’re bad people in the world, and it’s just so unfortunate to see that,” Bure said. “Sometimes, these kids got stuck with some bad people, and it’s awful to watch and really heartbreaking, and I feel so much for them, and I feel for their parents.”

In another interview with E! News, Bure warned those in the industry to be cautious.

“My advice is, if you love it, it can be a wonderful industry, but you really need people around you to protect you, that are looking out for your best interest. And just be careful of everyone else’s motives, because they’re not always your best interest.”

Bure also touched on the experience actor Drake Bell faced. Bell claimed that he was sexually abused at age 15 by dialogue coach Brian Peck.

“It just absolutely broke my heart, and it made me so sad for the people who had such terrible experiences,” she said. “And not just Drake Bell, but the other kids that were on those shows that maybe weren’t abused in a physical way, but just had terrible experiences that it just ruined their self-image.”

Emma Schwartz, the documentary’s director, recently shared with Deadline the importance of making people aware of the sexualization of children that took place in the ’90s.

“Maybe these are conversations we’re having in 2024 because we’re at a place in our culture where we can ask questions that were harder to vocalize in the past,” she said.

Part of Movieguide®’s review of QUEIT ON SET reads:

QUIET ON SET makes clear that children between 8 and 15 are extremely vulnerable and need to be protected from exploitation. Every aspect of this series is important for exposing the underside of Hollywood. QUIET ON SET has a very clear, strong moral worldview, with a few brief mentions of prayer. Although there’s very little visual sex or violence and practically no foul language in QUIET ON SET, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution because of the subject matter.

Bure added that not every person’s experience in the entertainment industry is bad.

“There’re very different experiences in the entertainment industry and some are wonderful. I had a wonderful experience,” she said.
