We Need to Think About ‘Unplugging’ AI Technology
By Movieguide® Contributor
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt says we need to “seriously think about unplugging” AI technology.
“We’re soon going to be able to have computers running on their own, deciding what they want to do,” he told George Stephanopoulos on an episode of THIS WEEK. “And the way that happens is it’s a series of decisions. We go from agents to then… more powerful goals, and eventually you say to the computer, ‘learn everything and do everything.’ And that’s a dangerous point.”
Schmidt added, “When the system can self-improve, we need to seriously think about unplugging it.”

“The future of intelligence… should not be left to people like me, right?” he continued. “The technologists should not be the only ones making these decisions. We need a consensus about how to put the right guardrails on these things to preserve human dignity. It’s very important.”
Schmidt is now the founder of White Stork, an AI drone startup, and has called the technology “the future of war.”
However, he again stressed the importance of having a human in control, saying it’s the key to preventing a “DR. STRANGELOVE situation [where] you have an automatic weapon which makes the decision on its own. That would be terrible.”
In addition to having a human controller, Schmidt also recommended using AI itself to keep an eye on the tech.
“Humans will not be able to police AI,” he explained. “But AI systems should be able to police AI.”
