Why HGTV Star Calls Nearly Dying One of His ‘Best Experiences’
By Movieguide® Contributor
EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER star Ty Pennington is sharing what one his best experiences was — and it’s not what you’d think.
He says his “best experience” was when he nearly died from a large abscess in his throat that obstructed his airway in 2023.
“Honestly, it was knowing that…you find out who loves you, because people message you and you’re like, oh my G**. It’s like you died and people finally message you and say…’I forgot how much I love you,’ you know?” Pennington told Fox this week.
“It was one of the best experiences…because you got to survive it, but you realized how much you’re worth to other people and how much you would be missed. Honestly, I think we should all go through something like that to really appreciate the people that love you, because sometimes we take that for granted. And I think that’s also what a home is like. You forget how important that is to our lives and when it’s gone, you know sometimes we all — and I think recently, especially here in LA — it’s a reality that things we take for granted could be taken away,” he explained.
In an update eight months after his near-death experience, Pennington said he was doing “great.”

“You know what’s great is if you almost die, you get so much attention. It feels so nice to be that loved,” he told ET. “I’m planning another one…No, I’m kidding!” he joked.
“It made me realize you just don’t know when your timecard’s gonna get pulled, so wake up, live every single day to the fullest,” he said.
The reality star seems to do just that and is staying busy. His latest project is a movie called NO ADDRESS about a young woman who is forced to be homeless. It comes out in theaters Feb. 28. His ongoing series, ROCK THE BLOCK, is set to have its sixth season come out in the spring. Season 5 was HGTV’s highest-rated series ever.
