How This TV Power Couple Levels Up Their Marriage

Chip and Joanna Gaines are best known for their work together transforming homes, but now they are transforming their physical health.

“There’s really no shortage of us doing things together,” Joanna told US Weekly about the new hobby that’s bringing the couple closer. “But what I’ve loved most about this new rhythm of working out together is that it’s new and different for us, but it’s also been interesting to see that the way we show up for each other in our little garage gym is the same way we always have at the office, or with a new project.”

The couple shared why they wanted to get into working out earlier this year.

“We joke that we’ve known each other for 25 years and we’ve never once worked out together. Last year I said, ‘Chip, let’s start working out because I want to be young for the kids,’” Joanna told PEOPLE. “I feel like every choice I make now will affect me at 70, and I don’t want to wait until I’m 70 to be like, ‘Oops, I need to fix some stuff.’”

Now that they’ve begun a routine of exercise, the Gaineses view working out the same as business: a task to tackle together.

“Getting to encourage each other to show up well, to work hard and do our best is how we’ve always worked together in business, so it’s been fun to see how our relationship is just consistent, no matter what we’re tackling,” Joanna explained.

She explained that as their children are getting older (Drake, 20, Ella, 18, Duke, 16, Emmie, 15, and Crew, 6), they have more time to enjoy extra activities.

“That’s part of where working out came in, and we also just started taking dancing lessons, which is another fun and hilarious thing for us to do,” she added. “Really, just continuing to find new ways to partner up is what keeps us strong, so we’re having fun with what that looks like this season.”

The Gaineses value encouraging one another and being each other’s biggest cheerleader above all else.

“For us, we’ve learned that encouragement really goes a lot farther than accountability, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with working out or I don’t think either of us would have made it very far,” Joanna said. “And it’s the same at work, just encouraging each other to keep moving forward, keep dreaming, keep pushing ourselves.”

Joanna celebrated her fitness journey in a January Instagram post.

“For the first time in our marriage, Chip and I decided to work out together. We started working w/ our friend @donsaladino in September and when he asked me to do push-ups on our first day I said, ‘I can’t. My back,'” she admitted.

“A few months in and I’ve never felt stronger,” she celebrated. “Today I did FIFTY push-ups! So I’m celebrating and putting this out there… I’ve let time, age, injury, and busyness be my excuse of why not to workout. I’m finally over the ‘it’s too hard’ hump and I’m ready to go! Who’s with me?!”
