Candace Cameron Bure reflected on the importance of friendships in a recent Instagram video.

“Having friendships with people that don’t see the same way as you is a beautiful thing, because, one, it really causes you to have to think about what you do believe,” Bure said in the video. “So, if they ask me this question, ‘Well, what is it that I do believe?’ If I say I’m a Christian, what does being a Christian mean? How could I answer that if someone asked me, ‘What is the gospel? I don’t know what that means, tell me what the gospel is. Why do you love Jesus so much?’ Do I know how to answer that question?”

Many of Bure’s Instagram followers commented on the post and expressed their feelings about what the FULL HOUSE star said.

“I love my friends but sometimes I find friendships so hard. Like sometimes it feels like I give everything and I get nothing back from them. Thank you for making this episode,” one follower wrote.

“I totally agree!” another person said. “We shouldn’t surround ourselves only with people who align. Being challenged is healthy, and if a friend is seeking, how wonderful they can trust your friendship.”

In the caption of the video, Candace Cameron Bure included Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”

From the very beginning, God did not design his people to be alone. We see this clearly in marriage, when God made a Eve as a “helper suitable” for Adam in Genesis.

But what does the Bible say about friendship?

God has designed us to be in fellowship with one another. That doesn’t mean we can’t be friends with people who don’t believe the same things that we do. Befriending unbelievers allows us to share the gospel with them.

However, as Peter wrote in 1 Peter 3:15, we are to “revere Christ as Lord” and “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

As followers of Christ, we must always be prepared to give an answer for our faith in God when talking with our friends.

Having believers as friends is important, too. Ecclesiastes 4:10 reminds us, “If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”

When Christians experience trials in their lives, a community of Christian friends can lift them up and share their burdens.
