More Detail:
FOR THE ONE is a 2024 real-life musical documentary by Angel Studios that chronicles two Christian musicians during their summer concert tour. Worship leaders within contemporary Christian America, Brandon Lake and Phil Wickham, reflect on the struggles of being on tour. They pray to God but are on the verge of professional burnout. Will the grace of God’s music rekindle their spirits?
FOR THE ONE chronicles the Summer Worships Nights, a 2024 concert tour that played across the United States. The documentary cuts between the concert performances and the behind-the-scenes lives of the singers and their crew. The movie follows Brandon Lake and Phil Wickham, two musicians / devout Christians who produced the most popular worship songs in the United States.
Throughout the movie, Lake and Wickham discuss the challenges of not losing their faith or sanity while on tour. Both men reveal their unlikely collaboration with one another, handling their responsibility as worship leaders and staying true to their Christian values. At the same time, they try to be good role models to their children and their production crew outside of concerts. When the concert grind begins to wear them down, they almost suffer a panic attack. Will catchy music be enough to rejuvenate Lake and Wickham?
From a production standpoint, FOR THE ONE spares no expense. The cinematography is beautiful, the sound mixing is excellent, and the editing is next level. The movie does a great job mixing the real-life concert performances with the more down-to-earth segments with Lake and Wickham. It is a shame this documentary was never nominated for an Academy Award for editing.
As a staple of most Angel Studios projects, FOR THE ONE has a strong Christian worldview. The two lead musicians openly preach the Gospel, discuss Jesus’s passion and kindness, and perform prayers in both public and private spaces. The songs played throughout the movie openly praise God’s name, the Apostles, and the Bible. Moreover, Lake and Wickham are fathers who care deeply for their kids despite being on tour. Another scene features Wickham and his father reminiscing over deepening their faith together.
Despite its strong moral character, the movie contains a few eye-opening elements. There is no blood, gore, foul language, sex, or even drug usage for that matter. However, Lake and Wickham discuss how they almost got panic attacks earlier in their careers. They talk about how the constant workload got to their head. In one scene, Lake reveals he dealt with a rare auto-immune disease that almost took his life. However, after meeting Wickham at Church, Lake was miraculously healed from the ailment.
The only potential drawback to FOR THE ONE is its lack of musical variety. The movie is hyper fixed on “Coldplay”-like rock music and not much else. Lake and Wickham’s music will transform the most cynical atheist into a true believer. However, most of the concert songs verge on being homogenous and “sonically simple.” On occasion, Lake and Wickham perform “down-to-earth” renditions of their songs on acoustic guitars. These scenes are a breath of fresh air, and it is a shame the movie did not include their lesser-known tracks.
