THE CHOSEN Season 6’s finale and Season 7’s premiere are officially confirmed to release as standalone movies exclusively in theaters.

Season 6’s finale will premiere in theaters on March 12, 2027. The premiere for Season 7 will launch the following year, on March 31, 2028. Both segments of the franchise will be designed and produced for a feature film experience, Deadline reported Thursday.

THE CHOSEN had theatrical releases of Seasons 3-5, which made over $140 million globally.

Season 6 will stream on Prime Video before the finale, and Season 7 will be available on Prime after the first episode hits theaters.

The upcoming season, Season 5, will premiere on Prime Video next month, on June 15, 2025.

Amazon MGM Studios and 5&2 Studios are behind the series. Lionsgate will handle distribution.

Jonathon Roumie, who plays Jesus in THE CHOSEN, said portraying Jesus’ crucifixion has been the most challenging thing in his career.

“It’s brutal,” he said. “This is the most difficult thing I think I’ve ever done. It’s the most difficult season.”

“It’s the most difficult role, and this being the most difficult role in the most difficult season, with the physicality that is expected, that I feel is expected, and that ultimately we will portray during Christ’s suffering and death — His passion — I don’t know anything else that could be more challenging to me as a performer,” he explained.

The cast is currently filming for Season 6 in Utah, KSL reported on Tuesday. The cast and crew have an exhaustive schedule.

“Most of it is at night. So, it means we’re shooting all through the night. It’s exhausting,” said director Dallas Jenkins. “This season is an 86-day shoot.”

“It’s almost 20 days longer than any other season we’ve ever done,” he added. “It’s the physical challenges, the logistical challenges that make it even harder.”

“The attention to detail and the amount of time and I believe, yes, love and honor and reverence and respect that went into building this set, is what we’re trying to bring to the filming of these scenes,” said Jenkins.

Jesus’ death isn’t just hard for Roumie but for everyone on set. It takes an emotional toll to portray one of the most grievous and important parts of history.

“And I think [the emotional toll is ] OK,” said Jenkins. “I think maybe God wants it that way. I think we are supposed to suffer and struggle a little bit. I think it’s the least we can do to capture this.”

Jenkins explained that the long wait for Season 6 is also caused in part by the careful editing and preparation it requires.
