Danny Gokey explained how inviting the Holy Spirit into your life will change everything and encouraged people to allow the Lord to take over their heart.
“This is not a magic prayer. When you pray this prayer, the Bible says, ‘When you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that He was raised from the dead,’ the God who created heaven and Earth comes to reside on the inside of you,” Gokey said. “You become His sanctuary. See, you were created for the glory of God to be on the inside of you.”
“This is a simple prayer, but with your whole heart, say it: ‘Father, I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord. And I believe in my heart that He was raised from the dead. Take my life. Thank you for taking my place on the cross. I deserve punishment, but you give me grace. You didn’t have to do it. And I say thank you. I surrender. Holy Spirit, live in me,’” Gokey continued.
Since finding success and a platform through AMERICAN IDOL in 2009, Gokey has made it his mission to spread the gospel and help as many people as possible come to know the Lord. At the same time, he continuously challenges Christians to live according to God’s will rather than the secularized Christianity that many think the faith is.

“We need Jesus people to start walking in the freedom that’s been paid for and walking int he knowledge of truth because there’s a broken world. And really, we should start doing more with our hands and feet than our mouth,” Gokey said in 2021 when he released his album Jesus People. “Most people have heard about Jesus in our world. Our country was founded upon Christ and Christian values. The thing is, there’s a cognitive dissonance. They hear Christianity, and they’re seeing Christianity. It just looks like the world… [Christians cannot] just talk about it, but [have to] live it sacrificially, they’re the ones that grab people’s attention. So we need Jesus people to do that.”
Furthermore, Gokey does not try to sell people on a Christianity that does not exist — that is without the pain and suffering of life. Many think that a life with Jesus is a life without difficulties. On the contrary, Jesus taught that as He was rejected by the world, so too will His followers. Gokey knows the pain of life firsthand as his fist wife died while they were still in their 20s. Though he remained faithful to the Lord and has since found healing, that pain follows him nonetheless.
As Gokey continues to enjoy a platform to speak into people’s lives, it is amazing just how committed to the Lord he remains as he works to bring even mpre people into a life changing relationship with the Lord.
