Gospel singer Carvin Winans shared all the details about his latest album, from the songs’ inspirations to the family members who lent a helping hand on the project.
“I just want to get out the music that God has given me and in the form that I believe He’s given me,” he told Billboard of Cool Gospel, his first solo album since 2019.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Winans spoke about the album’s lead single, “God Still Working On Me,” explaining, “There’s a saying in the church: ‘I’m not where I want to be, but I’m definitely not where I used to be.’”
“If God is working on you, at some point he’s gonna finish that work,” he continued. “God should be working on all of us and cleaning us up and changing our habits and ways. But He can only do that if you allow him to, because He’s not going to force himself on anybody. If you allow him to do it, he will continue to work on you.”
Speaking to Billboard about the song, Winans said, “‘God Still Working on Me’ is a song for the whole world to hear because God ain’t just working on me because I’m a Christian. And he ain’t finished with me yet because I’ve still got a ways to go. But whether you do Christian music or not, God wants to work on all of us.”
“God Still Working On Me” has already hit No. 1 on the Gospel Mediabase Chart. Winans celebrated this milestone in an Instagram post, writing, “I am so grateful! I want to thank God for giving me the gift to sing and allowing me to still be able to use that gift at this age, and I want to thank my Mom and Dad for nourishing that gift since I was 4yrs old!”
“I am so happy this song is blessing so many people and that they are allowing God to keep working on them,” he continued. “Don’t ever stop!”

Winans also gives a shout out to his famous family’s gospel legacy in the track “Family Is Family.”
“Family is everything to me,” he said. “My dad was like that. I miss my dad so much. I thank God my mom is still here…Family is very important to the structure of this world.”
Winans even had his family take part in the making of Cool Gospel.
“My wife [Chérie] was a co-writer on some of these songs,” he shared. “My two sons Carvin Jr. and Juan wrote a song for the record. My youngest daughter Laylah also collaborated on one of the songs. So it was just a fun project for me.”
Fans of Winans are excited to hear new solo songs from the singer — and happy he’s carrying on the tradition of keeping the music in the family!
