On June 26, McConaughey shared insight into his religious thoughts in a video on Instagram announcing his upcoming book, Poems & Prayers.
“I’ve always relied on logic to make sense of myself and the world,” the actor began. “I’ve always looked to reason to find the rhyme. I’ve always looked to the practical to get to the mystical. I’ve always looked at reality to find the dream.”
“But lately I’ve been finding that harder to do,” he continued. “I’ve talked to a lot of people who are also finding that hard to do. Me, I look around, I’m a bit confused, you know?”
He’s recently had a lot of questions he doesn’t have the answer to, and explained it’s difficult to know what to believe.
“But I want more belief. I want more belief in myself. I want more belief in you, others. I want more belief in God,” he shared.
“I think we got to admit if we look at the evidence, if we look at proof, if we look at a lot of our leaders, we are not going to find belief there, if anything. If anything, we’re finding reasons not to believe. And I’m not ready to give up on belief,” he said.
Poems & Prayers is a follow-up to his book, Greenlights. The actor says his new book is all about belief.
“It’s a book full of ditties and devotions that I’ve been writing since 1989. Words and rhymes that I’ve scribbled on napkins, recorded into microphones, words and rhymes I prayed on bended knee at my bedside, dinner table, and church pew. Some came from scars that I’ve earned,” he said.
He believes belief is the key to the meaning of life.
“We need more than hope today. I think we can all agree on that,” he said. “We need belief.”
McCaughey’s comments about logic and belief explain why he was reading The Case for Christ. It’s a renowned logic-based approach as to why Jesus existed and the Gospel is real.
McConaughey told Relevant about his belief in God in May, saying, “At times in my life, took advantage of the idea of, ‘Well, it’s all fate. What’s going to happen is going to happen. It’s all been written.’ I had a time where I had a couple of very agnostic years.”
“It wasn’t as much about disbelieving as it was more about telling myself, ‘Hey, quit chalking things up to fate,’” he said. “You have your hands on the wheel; you’re responsible for your decisions.’ That’s why you’ve got free will — you make the choice for yourself. Your hands are on the wheel.”
McConaughey is searching for meaning. Hopefully, he continues to find that in God.
