Granger Smith is breaking down the angry voicemail he got from one listener — and the prayer he has for him.
“They told me to stop talking about Jesus,” Smith began a recent podcast episode, explaining that his show has a phone number that listeners can call. This listener left several voicemails, which Smith ended up listening to.
“My desire is that this man would be saved, that the Lord would save Him, [and] that he would run to Jesus,” Smith said before playing the recording.
In the voicemail, the caller criticized him for talking about his faith, saying, “When I listen to you, and the questions you ask, and the things you talk about…it just drives me crazy.
“I don’t care about the fact that you love Jesus Christ,” he added.
Smith explained that it seemed like this man was speaking about his radio show, “After Midnight,” which is “not a religious show.” However, the former country star sometimes speaks about his faith during “After Midnight.”

In an interview with Barrett Media, Smith spoke about “After Midnight,” saying, “I started saying, Okay, God, I don’t know what I’m going to do financially because I’m now giving up my job. I’m giving up the only thing that’s paid the bills for my whole life. I don’t know how I’m going to pay the bills, but I feel like you’re leading me somewhere.”
“And boom, Premiere calls says, would you ever think about radio?” he continued. “You can do it from your house, and I thought there is. I’d never thought about it, but if I had thought about it, there’s no way I could have come up with an idea this good.”
Smith’s angry caller didn’t appreciate any mentions of his faith, but the former country singer said he’s just “been blinded because of the hardness of his heart.”
He then referred to John 15:18 — “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.”
Smith’s wife Amber also added her view on the man’s call, saying she had similar feelings about religious friends before she came to Christ.
“I didn’t get it. I didn’t understand because my heart was hardened,” she explained. “So now, having this new life [where] I cry when I read the word of God, it makes me want to see those people and be like, ‘How can you not see?’”
Amber continued, “It’s only by the power of the Holy Spirit that I was made alive, that I can see now. So I have to look at this guy and we have to pray for him.”
Smith finished the episode with a prayer for the caller, saying, “Lord, we pray for this man that he would be saved, that he would hear the gospel…and we would see him one day in eternity.”
“And I hope he calls back!” he added.
Smith also posted about the call on his Instagram page, writing, “I don’t know this guy’s name or where he’s from. Maybe he really does hate me, or maybe he’s venting from deeper wounds and I’m just in the warpath. But I wish I knew him. I wish we could meet for coffee. More than that, I wish he knew my God. I hope he reads this. I hope he keeps listening.”
This recent voicemail is a harsh reminder that there are some who will criticize others for sharing their faith, but as Smith did, it’s important to pray for these people in hopes they will find faith.
