DCU architect James Gunn revealed that the sequel to this summer’s hit, SUPERMAN, is slated to come to theaters on July 9, 2027, sharing a teaser on what the story will be about.

“MAN OF TOMORROW. In theatres July 9, 2027,” Gunn wrote on Instagram along with a comic book-style photo of Superman next to Lex Luther in his Warsuit.

The sequel was first announced in August after SUPERMAN proved a box office hit, grossing over $350 million at the domestic box office and over $600 million worldwide — the first DC movie to hit these milestones since THE BATMAN in 2022.

“Three years ago, I hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to reimagine and unify the creative direction of DC under one leadership team, by breathing new life and excitement into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world,” said Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav after SUPERMAN became a success in theaters. “James and Peter’s commitment to honoring the legacy of the DC Universe while forging something new and enthralling is inspiring.”

“Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films SUPERGIRL and CLAYFACE in theaters and the series LANTERNS on HBO Max, all part of a bold 10-year plan,” Zaslav added, casting a vision for the future of the DC Universe. “The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”

2025 has served as a pivotal time for superhero movies. Audiences’ interest in Marvel has grown as the franchise heads into a new Avengers culmination, and DC’s success proves there is enough life in the genre to re-launch its own universe. Of the top 10 movies so far this year at the domestic box office, four have been superhero based.

Meanwhile, video game adaptations — the genre that has seemed to be Hollywood’s replacement for superhero movies — only make up one of the top 10 movies at the box office so far.

“A lot of people think it’s going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences,” Gunn said when explaining why he believes DC could be bigger than Marvel ever was. “We are telling a big, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we’re a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we’ve gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely.”

“But we’re also creating a universe that is like STAR WARS, where there’s different times, different places, different things, or GAME OF THRONES, where characters are a little bit more morally complex,” he continued.

It is exciting that this version of DC already warrants a sequel. Hopefully Gunn will be able to continue to deliver and provide DC fans with many movie to come.
