JESUS FREAKS

“Stand Strong with Jesus”

What You Need To Know:

JESUS FREAKS, streaming on Prime Video, tells the story of Joanie, a college student in the 1970s who discovers a new way to connect with her faith and trust in Jesus. She urges her friends to grow in their faith as well. However, not everyone is as open to her and her “Jesus freak” friends. So, Joanie must decide whether or not to stand strong in her beliefs.

JESUS FREAKS is very low budget, giving it low production values that can distract the viewer at times. For example, there are some silly special effects, missing audio and placeholder footage that should have been deleted. Also, the plot is a little disjointed. For instance, some scenes in the movie’s first half really have nothing to do with the main plot. This can be confusing. However, JESUS FREAKS has a strong Christian worldview, with characters praying, talking about faith, and deciding to stand up for their views. JESUS FREAKS has one light obscenity, a scary scene where the female lead sees demons, and scene where people drink alcohol. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises discernment for younger children.

More Detail:

JESUS FREAKS, streaming on Prime Video, tells the story of Joanie, a young woman who finds a deeper connection with her faith during her 1970s college days. However, not all are so accepting of her views on faith, and Joanie must decide if it’s worth it to stand up for her beliefs — or follow along with everyone else.
It’s 1972, and Joanie is enjoying college. From being a cheerleader and sorority sister, to dating someone, she doesn’t think much about religion. However, after she has a conversation with one of the “Jesus freaks” on campus, Joanie starts to rethink her own relationship with faith.
Joanie strikes up a deep relationship with the other members of the “Jesus freak” group. In the group, she discovers a different way to worship, as well as a different way to view her relationship with God. She even signs up to serve as a missionary in a small town church.
However, the members of the church, who are aware of Joanie’s less-than-traditional views on Christianity, are not pleased she’ll be joining them. They write angry letters, but Joanie ignores them and shows up to serve anyway.
Joanie is a quick success with the church’s young people, who connect with her message of creating a personal relationship with Jesus. The church’s pastor is upset about Joanie’s increasing sway over the church’s youth. He tries to keep her away from them.
Joanie refuses to modify the way she speaks about her Christian faith. When things come to a head, will she back down or continue sharing her faith in the way she truly wants to do?
JESUS FREAKS has a good message, but is extremely low budget, which can distract the viewer from the movie’s plot. There are some scenes that feature silly special effects and green screens. Also, some scenes feel unfinished. For example, many scenes feature stock footage that feels like a placeholder, and some scenes feature missing audio or time stamps that haven’t been deleted. The movie’s plot is sometimes disjointed. For example, many scenes in the first half have nothing to do with the main plotline and are never addressed again.
JESUS FREAKS has a strong Christian message. Joanie is strong in her faith, even when her friends tease her. She also inspires other people to pursue their own personal relationships with God. She also refuses to denounce her views on faith, even when pressured by others. However, one brief scary scene shows Joanie seeing demons. Finally, JESUS FREAKS has one light obscenity, and one scene where people are drinking alcohol. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises discernment for younger children.
