New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was benched towards the end of their 6-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
Fields wasn’t sure what would happen in week 8, but he knew he would still work his hardest at practice to earn his starting role back.
Fields did just that and absolutely had himself a game on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, which brought the Jets their first win of the season.
According to the New York Jets, Fields completed “21-of-32 passes for 248 net yards and a TD (on a 15-yard, fourth-down strike to Tyler Johnson; their first offensive TD in the first half since Week 1), without a turnover and without being sacked (he had already been sacked 22 times this season). The offense rolled up 502 total yards, including 254 net rushing yards.”

After the game, Fields was overcome with emotion as the entire week was up in the air as to him starting.
“God is good. That’s all I got to say,” Fields declared. “I mean, it’s simple. God is good. All the trials and tribulations we’ve had this whole season, from last week to this week, to just all the noise around. You know, like I said earlier in the week, I found my peace in Him.”
After Fields was able to shower and decompress, he spoke to the media again and this time, got vulnerable about where his mental health was during the week leading up to the game.
“You know, it’s been a lot for me, emotionally, spiritually,” he told the media. “When I was on the field, I was about to start crying, but not because of we won, but just because of the goodness of God and just how everything you know, worked for the greater good, everything that I’ve been through this past week, everything that we’ve been through as a team these past seven weeks, it was a lot of ups and downs.
“I found myself in my closet crying on the ground, lying down, not because of the hardships, not because of the troubles,” Fields continued. “I felt like, you know, I was built to handle that, and I was put in place to handle this situation, but in that moment when I was talking to my best friend, you know how hard it was, and just, you know, not wavering faith-wise.
“I just got a text from my sister and my stepmom, and it was just an encouraging text on, you know, just keep going and keep spreading the faith,” the quarterback added. “So that was just a sign from God for me to keep going, and that, you know, I’m in the right place. Yesterday, I was just praying over and over and over again, like, ‘just one win.’ And, you know, but all that to say God is real. God is good, and everything that we go through in this life is for a purpose.”
Justin Fields wasn’t sure how Sunday’s game against the Bengals would go for the Jets. At first, it didn’t go well. The Jets were down 23 points heading into the fourth quarter, but through his leadership, determination, perseverance, and faith in God, Fields led his team to one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history. Fields couldn’t do anything but express complete gratitude to God after the win.
