Actor Scott Patterson broke his silence about his unexpected departure from the TV drama SULLIVAN’S CROSSING, saying that fans “deserve to know the truth” about the confusion surrounding his exit.
Patterson played Harry “Sully” Sullivan on the series and revealed that his decision to leave the show came after ongoing disagreements behind the scenes.
“Every actor knows what it’s like to fall in love with a character and a story,” he began a statement on Instagram earlier this month. “I fell in love with Sully and have nothing but fondness for him. The creative differences were becoming untenable, and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue.”

“It’s unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite, and those who sadly already have spoken out are also fully aware of this fact, and yet chose to say otherwise,” the actor said. “I was not intending to make any statement, but the fans of the books and the show deserve to know the truth as I have always been respectful of those who support this industry by watching and loving these characters, we are so dang lucky and blessed to portray and bring to life.”
He concluded, “The fans deserved better than to think the embodiment of this character, me, would just disrespect not only the show, but them. In the end, we’re all fans of these characters and stories, and I’ll always support and defend the truth.”
People in the comment section showed support for Patterson and his decision.
“You were the only reason I started watching this show. I won’t be watching the new season now,” one person said. Another added, “oh no! you were the reason i started watching! i’m sad to see you go but totally respect your decision, their loss!”
SULLIVAN’S CROSSING executive producer Roma Roth hinted at Patterson’s exit a week prior, noting that the character would not appear in the upcoming season.
“Season 3 of SULLIVAN’S CROSSING ended with Sully leaving for Ireland, beginning a new chapter in his life,” she said. “Season 4 picks up the next day, with Sully still overseas. While he isn’t physically present in this season, the character remains an important part of the world with the potential to be included in future seasons should that align with the ongoing creative.”
The new season is still set to premiere Sunday, March 22.
Movieguide® gave Season 3’s first episode a -1 content score. Part of the review reads, “SULLIVAN’S CROSSING: ‘New Beginnings’ should have enough drama stemming from the main character’s loss to hold the viewer’s attention. However, it falls flat thanks to boring dialogue.”
Movieguide® notes that the episode “features three scenes where the characters’ kisses escalate. In one of these scenes, a character intentionally removes her shirt (exposing her bra) to seduce her boyfriend at work. Coupled with a humanist worldview and at least one use of God’s name in vain, these scenes prompt MOVIEGUIDE® to advise caution for teenage and young adult audiences.”
It will be interesting to see how fans respond to SULLIVAN’S CROSSING’s new season without Patterson.
