Two years ago, Gary Sinise lost his son, Mac, to cancer. Now, he’s telling his story in a new memoir, Graceful Warrior.
“Hey folks, today I’d like to take a moment to share something deeply personal with you,” Sinise began in a social media post last week. “Over the past few years, my family has walked through a season of profound love and loss. My son Mac was a remarkable young man, full of talent, heart, and purpose.”
Mac was a musician who fought a rare bone cancer from 2018-2024.
“Our family entered a journey that none of us could have prepared for,” Sinise recalled. “A little over two years ago I went to work writing my second book, sharing his story, as well as challenges and blessings our family experienced along the way, the love that held us together, the faith that sustained us, the grief that changed us, and how we continue to move forward daily with a strength we didn’t know we had.”

“This book is for Mac. It’s also for anyone who has faced loss, uncertainty, or hardship, and is searching for a line of hope in the middle of it,” the FORREST GUMP actor explained. “Something I feel I needed to do to help with my own healing.”
The book will release on Mac’s birthday, Nov 10, and is available for preorder from book retailers now.
Part of the book’s description reads, “Gary offers a quiet but powerful reminder that hope remains within reach, even in life’s darkest moments. With honesty and heart, he invites us into a journey both intimate and universal. This is a story for the ages, of a love that endures, and a light that refuses to go out.”
Mac was a prolific artist and composer. Months after his passing, his family released two of albums with his melodies. This year, the Sinise family is working on another album that will be released soon.
On March 31, Sinise shared one of his melodies, “Angel’s Theme,” on social media.
“It was stored in his files from his early college days,” he said. “Mac was just beginning to write on piano and for other instruments and came up with the beautiful melody featuring violin and piano. Not only did I find the recording he made, but I also found his original chart and arrangement.”
“I loved it so much that I brought it to my LT Dan Band music director Ben Lewis and we’ve added it to our set list. Mac’s salute to the troops,” he said.
It’s a tragedy that Mac has passed, but his music and life is so very appreciated by many.
