After the tragedy that happened on set while filming RUST, Alec Baldwin has no desire to return to acting and would rather spend time with his wife and seven kids.

In 2021, while on the RUST set, a gun Baldwin was holding accidentally discharged, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

“For me, because of the situation in New Mexico, that was very painful,” Baldwin said on the “Awards Chatter” podcast. “I wound up staying home a lot. I was home with my kids for three and a half years. I hardly worked at all. And that’s just changing now, I’m going to go off and do a bunch of things, but I was home and I got used to it, and I don’t want to leave my house anymore. I don’t. I don’t want to work anymore. I don’t. I really don’t. I want to retire and stay home with my kids.”

In 2021, Baldwin was first “charged with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023, but those charges were dropped three months later. He was then charged with involuntary manslaughter again in 2024, but those charges were dismissed with prejudice during his July 2024 trial after a judge ruled that prosecutors sat on evidence that would have helped shed light on how live ammunition was brought onto the set,” PEOPLE reported.

He leaned on his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, through the difficult time, admitting he doesn’t “know where I would be if I didn’t have her. I don’t know what would’ve happened to me.”

Baldwin’s trial and what happened in his life during that time was chronicled in a 2025 documentary directed by Rory Kennedy titled THE TRIAL OF ALEC BALDWIN.

“A provocative examination of celebrity haters, public vitriol, and the toxic price of fame. DOC NYC alumna Rory Kennedy depicts how the tragic accidental death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of RUST in 2021 hatched a distressing cottage industry of career-furthering paparazzi and prosecutors maneuvering for payoffs and power,” a synopsis reads. “Talented and adored, yet also flawed and prone to explosions of anger, NYC-based Hollywood star Alec Baldwin becomes a lightning rod of envy and online hate as he fights to protect himself and his family from our culture’s revolting empathy gaps.”

“Rory Kennedy’s sober assessment never lets you forget the Hutchins family’s tragedy while walking us through a riveting final act detailing the shocking revelations of Baldwin’s trial in New Mexico,” it concludes.

In the years since the tragic incident, Baldwin faced both public scrutiny and personal reflection, ultimately emerging with a renewed perspective on what matters most: his family.
