Nintendo completed principal photography on its live-action adaptation of THE LEGEND OF ZELDA.
Director Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Maze Runner trilogy) leads the project. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad produce the film. Sony Pictures co-fianced the project, and Sony Pictures Releasing will distribute it.
British actors Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth star as Princess Zelda and Link. Nintendo announced the casting on July 16, 2025.
Miyamoto shared the news on X: “I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Bo Bragason-san will play Zelda, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san will play Link. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.”
Filming began in November 2025 in New Zealand and wrapped in April 2026, according to production timelines from Nintendo and industry sources.
Nintendo originally set the release for March 26, 2027.
In June 2025, Miyamoto announced a shift to May 7, 2027, citing production needs.
He wrote on X: “For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. This date falls some weeks later than our original announcement; we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be.”
Nintendo released first-look photos showing the lead actors in costume but has not disclosed plot specifics. The film adapts elements from the long-running video game series, which follows Link as he works to protect the kingdom of Hyrule. Details on the supporting cast remain limited. Some early set reports mentioned that Dichen Lachman might appear as Impa, though Nintendo has not confirmed that role.
Movieguide® will publish a full review of the completed film after its theatrical release on May 7, 2027. The review will evaluate the movie’s content, themes, and family suitability based on the final onscreen product.
