PRINCESS DIARIES fans, rejoice! Anne Hathaway just confirmed they are hard at work on the highly anticipated third movie.
“One hundred percent, we’re constantly working on it,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “[DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2] cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space, [so] it became impossible to focus on both at the same time.”
Hathaway shared that “the intention is to make PRINCESS DIARIES hopefully next” but made sure to let fans know the third movie “is not greenlit or confirmed yet.”
Right now, the actress and her team are “chipping away at the script” because, as Hathaway said, “If I learned anything from [DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.”

Hathaway starred alongside Julie Andrews in 2001’s THE PRINCESS DIARIES, based on the popular book series of the same name. The pair reprised their roles for the 2004 sequel, THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT.
News broke that a third movie was in the works in 2024, with director Adele Lim telling Deadline, “As a diehard fan of the original PRINCESS DIARIES, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
There’s no word on who might appear in the movie alongside Hathaway, as Andrews has made it clear she probably won’t be returning.
“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,” the SOUND OF MUSIC star told Access Hollywood in a 2022 interview. “It was talked about very shortly after two came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run.”
Chris Pine, who played Hathaway’s love interest in PRINCESS DIARIES 2, shared that he would be on board during a 2016 fan Q&A.
“Don’t you pray every night for a PRINCESS DIARIES 3?” he was asked, to which Pine replied, “Have you been reading my diary?”
Meg Cabot, who wrote the book series the movies are based on, recently spoke about PRINCESS DIARIES 3 at New York’s BookCon, telling an audience, “I don’t know when they’re going to film it because Annie Hathaway, as you’ve probably seen, is making a million movies right now. But one of these days, she’s going to go to the castle we have actually rented and is sitting there waiting.”
Keep your fingers crossed that PRINCESS DIARIES 3 gets the official greenlight soon!
