If Jesus could pick a sport to play, do you think He would choose wrestling?

There’s an indie wrestler named “Jesus” whose entire bit is based on using the Jedi force to take down his opponent.

We’ll never know if Jesus would actually partake in wrestling. But one thing is for certain: Jesus has entered the ring. Various fighters are sharing their faith in Christ, including Antonio Vargas.

“God delivered me about 23, 24, and that’s why, every time you see me in the ring, I come out to Christian music,” he said on the “Sports Spectrum” podcast. “I worship. That’s not something I just do just to fight. It’s a lifestyle. In private, I don’t listen to worldly music. I watch what I hear. I watch what I see. I’m always guarding things, always reading scripture.”

Vargas isn’t in the ring for personal glory but to bring glory to Christ.

“My job as a fighter is to shine the light of Christ and to lead people to Christ because you see a lot of hypocrisy in the church and stuff like that, and I’m like, ‘Lord, I want to practice what I preach. I want to walk the walk,’” he said.

Tyson Fury, who just defeated Arslanbek Makhmudov in London 120-108, 120-108 and 119-109, also speaks about his faith.

In 2024, Fury faced Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk, and he said the two were the “biggest Christians in boxing.”

“We are the two biggest Christians in boxing,” Fury said, per The Christian Post. “Without failure, I can train all I want, but whoever God wants to win this fight will win. It doesn’t matter if you’re from the gutter or the kingdom of wherever. Listen, being a champion is great. But to see someone who is also a world champion and has big faith in God is unbelievable. Beautiful.”

Former professional boxing legend and Hall of Famer Andre Ward, who is still part of the boxing world, puts his full faith in Jesus Christ.

“When people see me throughout my career or they see me now and are like, ‘you know, you’re always talking about God,’” Ward said on the “Sports Spectrum” podcast. “Listen, when you’ve been given a second chance the way that I have – and I know I shouldn’t be here doing what I’m doing – I can’t help but give God the glory.”

“You know, the Bible says to ‘train a child up in the way that they should go and when they are older, they won’t depart from it.’ You know that’s just the training of my dad,” he added. “You know the local news stations started coming and he would give God glory, he wasn’t shying away from that. Those were seeds that were being sown.”

Whether through a viral indie wrestler using “the force” or real-life champions like Antonio Vargas, Tyson Fury and Andre Ward praising God, it looks like faith is shining in combat sports.
