Mother and son Priscilla and JC Shirer shared their thoughts on the importance of preparation.

“I was speaking for the entrepreneur club at Liberty University,” JC recalled during an episode of the “Full Fledged” podcast, sharing that he didn’t feel like preparing for the talk.

He spoke to his mother, who urged him to practice and prepare for the speech, but JC decided to wing it.

“Afterwards, you said, ‘Did you prepare?’ And I went, ‘I don’t really think it went as well. I definitely could have done things better,’” he said. “You told me, ‘You actually need to not give them anything less than preparation…it doesn’t matter how [the audience] perceived it. They don’t deserve anything less than your best.’”

Priscilla added, “And neither does God…the reality is, the danger of having talent is that you can ride the coattails of talent…but at some point, you’re going to become complacent.”

“God has given you this natural talent, yes, but there’s gifting attached to it. He’s going to use it to edify the body, and you need to fan into flame the gift,” she continued. “God has given me something that I need to make sure that I take care of until I see Him face-to-face, ‘cause we gonna have to give a response, how about that?”

Priscilla has previously spoken about the difference between talent and spiritual gifts given to us by God.

“Just because something is a talent doesn’t mean it’s a spiritual gift ‘cause the difference between the two is the source of the two,” she explained. “You can have a natural knack for the piano, a natural knack for athleticism, for writing, for whatever. It’s just your natural bend, and you can practice it and hone it and become an expert in it.”

Priscilla continued, “That doesn’t make it a spiritual gift just ‘cause you’re good at it. The spiritual gift is something the Holy Spirit is the source of, which you also need to exercise and practice these spiritual gifts.”

She has also spoken to Jesus Calling about how she never expected to be a public speaker and actress but was always committed to following God’s plan for her.

“Full-time ministry was not even near the plan I had for my life. It’s not what I thought I’d be doing, but here we are 20 years later, in a ministry where I’ve had the privilege to, most of the time, stand on a platform and share God’s Word and His truths with His women and with people,” she shared.  “It’s been such a gift to be able to be a part of telling His story on such a broad stage.”

Whatever God’s called you to, take time to prepare as best as you can.
