Season 4 of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER is already in the beginning stages of development ahead of Season 3’s Nov. 11 launch.
Though it has not been officially greenlit by Amazon, preproduction is expected to start this fall and shooting in early 2027, The Hollywood Reporter said. The season will most likely drop in 2028.
When Amazon acquired the TV rights for the series, it made a five-season commitment. The Fan of The Rings reported that it’s highly likely the remaining two seasons will be produced, as Amazon would owe the Tolkien estate a $20 million “kill fee” for each season it chooses not to produce.
In Season 3, fans will see a significant time jump that takes place years after Season 2. Season 3 will occur “at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will – and at last rule all Middle-earth,” Prime Video said.
Series returnees are Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), Charlie Vickers (Sauron/Halbrand), Robert Aramayo (Elrond) and Ismael Cruz Córdova (Arondir). New cast members in Season 3 include Andrew Richardson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Eddie Marsan, Adam Young and Zubin Varla, Showbiz Junkies reported.
Part of Movieguide®’s -1 review of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER Season 2 Episode 5 reads, “Episode Five neatly brings out the Christian, biblical, moral themes in LORD OF THE RINGS. For example, it warns viewers that power tends to corrupt but urges them to courageously oppose evil with faith and values. There’s even a scene in Episode Five that warns against power-hungry rulers and higher taxes.”
Season 3 is created by showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Other EPs are Lindsey Weber, Justin Doble, Kate Hazell and director Charlotte Brandstrom. Matthew Penry-Davey will produce while Ally O’Leary, Tim Keene and Andrew Lee co-produce. Like the previous two seasons, Season 3 will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
According to Amazon, the series has had 185 million viewers worldwide and “is one of the highest performing and most-viewed titles ever on Prime Video.” The first season had the largest launch of any Prime Video series ever. The company also credits the series for its high subscriber numbers.
Season 3 debuts on Nov. 11 with episode one. Seven more episodes will gradually follow, for a total of eight episodes.
