ONE MISSED CALL

"Abhorrent Metaphysical Messages"

What You Need To Know:

ONE MISSED CALL is a ghost story. Young psych student Beth Raymond and her friend, Taylor, are frightened by the recent mysterious “accidental” deaths of two of their student friends. Before they died, both friends got a phone call on their cell phones from themselves, dated at the exact moment of their deaths. Beth’s friend Taylor gets a similar call. They go to the police, but only one detective listens to them, because his sister died under similar circumstances. When Taylor also dies and Beth gets a call, Beth and the detective begin to suspect that an evil woman’s ghost may be the murderer.

ONE MISSED CALL begins with a spooky mystery, but there are some silly moments and loose ends. For example, some of Beth’s actions in the third act don’t make sense. It turns out that there is an evil ghost and a good ghost. At two climactic moments, the good ghost helps Beth. This strong occult element is matched by a new Age, pagan comment about spiritual energy that’s heretical, plus anti-Christian depictions against Christian exorcisms. Ultimately, ONE MISSED CALL contains a lot of abhorrent theological messages that contradict the Bible.

Content:

(PaPaPa, OOO, FRFRFR, B, AB, LL, VVV, S, A, D, M) Very strong pagan, slightly New Age worldview containing very strong occult content about an evil ghost/poltergeist with a good ghost helping out twice at the right time and including very strong false theology comparing spiritual energy and ghost energy to electricity that can enter cell phones and apparently manipulate the physical world, with some solid moral elements about fighting evil but also with anti-Christian content where a TV exorcism ritual doesn’t really work, which confirms the heroine’s rejection of that method; nine obscenities (no “f” words), three strong profanities, and three light profanities; strong scary violence that’s sometimes gruesome includes hallucinations of slightly rotten corpses or real life people that ghost makes their faces to look like corpses, woman hallucinates black centipedes entering another woman’s hand, man stabbed with flying pole from explosion, hand pulls woman and cat under water, poltergeist/ghost shatters windows when it appears in one scene, gruesome animated corpse helps heroine and is supposed to be animated by the corpse’s spirit or ghost, implied stabbing in eye, fire, implied child abuse with cigarettes, references to possible child abuse, little girl dies from asthma attack while being punished after trying to cut her sister’s arm, scary child ghosts frighten people, and suicide; brief sexual content when young man says he had a great time “having sex” and doing “phone sex” at the same time and a couple making out are interrupted; no actual nudity but female cleavage in two scenes; alcohol use; smoking; and, jealousy, upset young man is rude to young woman, flashbacks to heroine’s mother taunting her when she was a young girl, and policewoman is not very helpful.

More Detail:

ONE MISSED CALL is a ghost story about an evil ghost killing people.

They go to the police, but only one detective seems interested in their case, Det. Andrews, whose sister died under similar circumstances.

Andrews and Beth investigate the possible connections among the victims before Taylor dies. They track the murders to an orphaned little girl with a musical teddy bear, whose mother and sister died under mysterious circumstances. They begin to suspect that the mother’s evil ghost may be the murderer.

ONE MISSED CALL presents viewers with a spooky mystery, but there are some silly moments and loose ends. For example, at the very time when Beth is supposed to die, she goes alone into the burned hospital building where a fire apparently killed the little orphan girl’s mother. Talk about going into the lion’s den!

Without spoiling the plot twists in the third act, it turns out that there is an evil ghost in the story and a good ghost. At two climactic moments, the good ghost helps Beth. This strong occult element is matched by the movie’s heretical proposition that spiritual energy (including that of a dead person) acts like electricity and is able to enter cell phones and apparently manipulate the physical world. This premise sounds like a New Age philosophy developed from Christian Science and other dangerous non-Christian cults.

Meanwhile, Taylor decides to get help from a Christian exorcist on a TV show called AMERICAN MIRACLES. The Christian exorcism does not work, which confirms Beth’s argument to Taylor against performing the exorcism. Thus, there is an explicit anti-Christian spin to the movie’s pagan, occult worldview.

All in all, therefore, despite its appealing lead characters, ONE MISSED CALL contains a lot of abhorrent theological or metaphysical messages. Such messages contradict the Bible’s worldview at several important points.
