SHALL WE KISS

"Shall We Not"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

SHALL WE KISS?, a French movie, is a story-within-a-story featuring the story of two couples and the consequences that one kiss can make. Emilie meets Gabriel, and after dinner, he asks her if he may kiss her. She refuses because she says that there is no “kiss without consequences.” She tells him a story, which makes up most of the movie, of Nicolas and his female best friend, Judith, who’s married. Nicolas and Judith kiss and that turns into an extended sexual affair. However, two plot twists result in a surprise ending.

SHALL WE KISS? has an excellent cast and many funny moments. The actors play each scene for its emotional and comedic worth. However, the entire set up of the movie turns on the fact that, if a man isn’t in an intimate relationship with a woman, then other women in his life should “service” him. The proposition of “shall we kiss” is really “shall we have sexual relations.” The movie shows adultery having destructive consequences, but offsetting these negative results is a happy ending where everything works out better. The movie’s message and sexual content warrant much extreme caution.

Content:

(RoRoRo, SS, NN, A, MM) Very strong Romantic worldview with some fatalistic statements; no foul language; no violence; implied sexual scenes, much discussion of sex, discussion that a male character has to have sexual relations and can’t control himself, and much kissing and fondling; upper female nudity, upper male nudity, rear male nudity; drinking of alcohol; smoking; and, adultery and prostitution shown in a positive light.

More Detail:

SHALL WE KISS?, a French movie, is a story-within-a-story featuring the story of two couples and the consequences that one kiss can make.

Emilie meets Gabriel by chance, and after dinner, he asks her if he may kiss her. She refuses because she says that there is no “kiss without consequences.” She then tells him a story, which takes up most of the movie, of Nicolas and his female best friend Judith who’s married. When Nicolas loses his girlfriend, he “has needs” and tells his friend Judith about them. Judith suggests a prostitute, which he tries, but eventually he asks Judith for a kiss. This turns into an extended sexually intimate affair that threatens to break up Judith’s marriage and Nicolas’ relationship with his new girlfriend.

As the plot twists and turns, Judith and Nicolas struggle with what to do and how to be together. Emilie finishes her story with explaining that’s why she won’t kiss Gabriel goodnight. However, there are still two plot twists left to come that result in a surprise ending.

SHALL WE KISS? has the makings to remind viewers of a funny screwball comedy from the 1940s. Emmanuel Mouret, who plays Nicolas, also wrote and directed the movie. There are very funny, sometimes dead pan reactions by Nicolas that are very witty and work well. The cast is amazing, playing each scene for its emotional and comedic worth.

The problem is that the entire set up of the movie turns on the fact that if a man isn’t in an intimate relationship with a woman, then other women in his life should “service” him. The proposition of “shall we kiss” is really “shall we have sexual relations.” The adultery aspect to the movie is shown to be destructive, but the twists at the end show that after the adultery and subsequent divorce everything worked together in the end without much consequence. So, while adultery is portrayed as bad, it can turn out good and even to be sought after.

There is no foul language and no violence. Even so, there are many scenes of implied sexual relations as well as rear male nudity and upper female nudity.

The movie is well made and even charming in some places. However, the overarching messages and sexual content warrant much cautious discernment.
