BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE

What You Need To Know:

BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE is the story of Saya, a teenage half girl/half vampire. Saya has sworn to kill Onigen, the evil matriarch of all vampires and the one responsible for the death of her father and grandfather. With superhuman strength and spectacular martial arts ability, Saya does finally get a showdown of sword, magic powers and martial arts with Onigen, only to discover that Onigen is her mother. Onigen tries to use Saya’s hatred for her to seduce her to become a full demon. Saya destroys Onigen and disappears to “find what’s on the other side of the looking glass” or until a sequel, whichever comes first.

BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE is a small story interrupted by blood soaked action sequences. What plot there is borrows heavily from every other martial arts movie and even from STAR WARS. Based on a Japanese movie of the same name, there is a strong comic book following for this title. Hardcore fans who can stomach the blood letting may enjoy this movie, but media-wise viewers probably will avoid it because of the movie’s graphic violence and occult themes. Also, the characters are not sympathetic.

Content:

(OOO, B, Ab, FR, L, VVV, A, MM) Strong magic-based occult worldview mixed with biblical worldview of God making man but that is also mixed with an anti-biblical, false theology that evil “reminds us of God’s imperfections and questions about not being able to know “what is right”; five obscenities; many characters graphically sliced in half, multiple characters decapitated and limbs sliced off all with much, much blood, character slices own hand on purpose, characters shot with gun point blank, graphic sword fight with much blood, at least 50 onscreen bloody deaths; no sexual content; no nudity; drinking of alcohol; no smoking; and, deceit and character drinks blood

More Detail:

BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE is the story of Saya, a teenage half girl/half vampire who has sworn to kill Onigen, the evil matriarch of all vampires and the one responsible for the death of her father and grandfather. With superhuman strength and spectacular martial arts ability, Saya is hired by a secret organization that works within the US government to stop the vampires. Saya’s pay for her services is the promise that they will help her discover Onigen plus a daily supply of human blood that she must drink in order to survive.

Saya does finally get to a showdown of sword, magic powers and martial arts with Onigen, only discover that Onigen is in fact her mother. Onigen tries to lure Saya via hatred for her to become a full demon. Saya destroys Onigen and disappears to “find what’s on the other side of the looking glass” or until a sequel, whichever comes first.

BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE is a small story that interrupted by blood soaked action sequences. What plot there is borrows heavily from every other martial arts movie and even from STAR WARS (“I’m your father, Luke”).

The action sequences involving much CGI animation is strong and the movie overall is directed well for the action genre. The characters, however, never build strong empathy with the audience and so there is no emotional impact to Saya being an outcast not at home in the world of humans or in the world of demons.

Saya encounters a human teenage girl who shows her kindness and affirms that Saya is a human being not controlled by evil. There are statements about helping people being the right thing to do and that God made man and made the angels/demons. However, any positive references are quickly overshadowed by the occult theme and the graphic violence.

Based on the 2000 film of the same name, there is a strong comic book following for this title. Hardcore fans who can stomach the bloodletting may find this movie to be enjoyable, but media-wise viewers will want to exercise extreme caution and discernment for the graphic violence and occult themes.
