4 World Series Players Who Champion Their Faith

By Movieguide® Staff

The MLB World Series is tied between the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros, who have taken one game each of the best of seven playoff series.

As both teams gear up for game three tonight, there are several players whose motivation goes beyond baseball.

Here is a short list of four baseball players who are vocal about their faith currently playing in the World Series. Please note, this is by no means a full comprehensive list of all the faith-filled players on the teams.

Jose Altuve (Astros)

The Houston Astros’ second baseman lifted his team to the game two win after posting a double, the first run of the game, and a home run in the seventh inning to help seal the team’s victory.

The homer marked Altuve’s 22nd career postseason home run, which ties Bernie Williams for second place on the all-time postseason home run list.

Despite his success, many scouts said that the 5′ 6″ Altuve was too small to play baseball. Altuve turned to his faith in God instead of dwelling on the naysayers.

“I really wanted to do it, and if God gave me the ability to play, it was because he wanted me to go all the way through,” Altuve told CBN. “And I thank God for everything because he’s real. It’s hard to believe that what you dreamed as a kid is real life now.”

“Before I leave my house every single day, I ask God for health for my family and for me,” he told CBN Sports. “And then when I’m about to play the game I just pray and I ask God to keep every single player and every single people on the stands healthy and that we just can go there and compete in a good way.”

Altuve already has one World Series win under his belt, but Christ remains his No. 1 priority through it all.

“I think God has blessed me only because I let Him control everything that is around me,” he said. “My faith in Him and my love for him is just to not worry about just little things. It’s just to worry about my faith in Him and that way He’s going to put in order everything around me.”

Josh James (Astros)

In 2018, the 25-year-old rookie had only started one game all season before the Houston Astros called his number in late September. The decision proved to be the right one, as James helped his team to victory.

James took to Twitter to express his thankfulness to God for the opportunity and his solid performance.

“God has been good to me,” the pitcher said.

James would also post scripture on his Twitter.

As the Astros enter a tied series, team depth will be an essential factor in later games.

Luke Jackson (Braves)

Despite a rocky start to his career, Luke Jackson has cemented himself into the Braves lineup as one of their go-to relief pitchers.

Before every game, Jackson can be seen praying, just one way he expresses how his faith is important to him in all areas of his life.

“Yes, born and raised in a Christian family, I’m thankful for. Mom’s from La Grange, Kentucky, Dad’s from Miami and he was raised in a Christian home. Mom really instilled it in us when we were younger and I graduated from a Christian high school. I’m a big believer in faith and I kind of carry it with me wherever I go. It’s a good foundation for me,” Jackson said in an interview from 2014.

On his Instagram, Jackson encouraged his followers to “love like Jesus.”

“Above all else is love. Love like Jesus does,” he captioned a photo with a drawing of a heart and a cross.

Ronald Acuna Jr. (Braves)

For left-fielder Ronald Acuna Jr., faith has been central in his journey to the major leagues and now has an opportunity to help the Braves win a World Series.

Acuna entered the MLB in 2018, at the age of 19, after three quick years in the minor league.

Both baseball and faith run in the family. According to Sports Spectrum, Acuna’s father and grandfather also played in the major leagues.

“The most important thing is to never lose your faith,” he told Sports Spectrum. “Just because your faith is what helps maintain you, especially during the tough times that happen on the field and off the field.”

Even with the pressure of playing a professional sport, Acuna held onto his faith.

“Every time I take the field or even when I wake up, I have a conversation with God,” he said. “I feel like I always pray to Him and have that relationship and I feel like He listens.”

“Your faith is what helps maintain you,” he added.
