5 Actresses from the 90’s Who Now Take on Wholesome Roles
By Movieguide® Contributor
Many of us had childhoods with many 90s sitcoms, including FULL HOUSE and SISTER SISTER. The beloved actresses from these shows haven’t stopped acting but pivoted in the types of movies they star in. We’ve gathered a list of actresses from the 90s who now take on wholesome roles. From Hallmark to Great American Family, these ladies choose to work with studios to create family-friendly films.
Candace Cameron Bure

Candace Cameron Bure, beloved for her role as DJ in FULL HOUSE, has committed to taking on roles that edify and encourage her audience, leading them down good paths. She been vocal over the years about her faith being most important to her.
“To share the Gospel within the movies and remind people of the hope of Jesus, that’s what has been inspiring for me, and I feel like it’s given me a new energy going into continuing to make Christmas movies, not only as an actor but also other Christmas movies I produce. Sharing that within the stories is really powerful for me and important in my journey of faith and as a creative in the entertainment industry,” Bure shared.
Bure wants her faith to shine in her roles and even her lines. The former Hallmark actress is now the Chief Creative Officer for Great American Family.
Danica McKeller

Danica McKeller found fame as Winnie Cooper on THE WONDER YEARS. The actress was invited to church by her friend Candace Cameron Bure. “We were trying to get to church together she invited me to church…finally went on Palm Sunday. It was a Passion Play at her church in Los Angeles, and that’s when it happened,” McKellar explained.
“The Holy Spirit bowled me over, like, I was overtaken by the Holy Spirit. I was so amazed and so emotional, I was just bawling. I’m watching the story play out. And all of the times in my life that I felt connected to something bigger than me, all of the times that I’ve wanted to do the right thing just because it’s the right thing…all my questions were answered with, like, no words. It was just like, ‘This is what I’ve been looking for my entire life.’”
Today, McKellar is outspoken about her faith just like Bure. The two remain friends and continue to make positive and uplifting movies on Great American Family. Movieguide® previously reported about their friendship: “Candace has been wonderful. After we watched the play, I was like, ‘This is what I’ve been looking for my whole life and didn’t realize it’…And it’s been wonderful. It’s been a wonderful gift,” McKellar said.
Lacey Chabert

Lacey Chabert, the sweet little girl in PARTY OF FIVE and Gretchen from MEAN GIRLS, is a Hallmark queen, as they say. She’s known for her strong Christian convictions and works with Hallmark to create movies about the heart.
“I think the thing that has become the most rewarding for me and being a part of these movies is when I meet people, the common thread is always Thanks for doing something that’s uplifting,” Chabert told Forbes about fans sharing how her Hallmark films have inspired them. “Those movies helped me while I was recovering from surgery or going through a difficult time in life. At this point, I kind of consider it an honor to be a part of bringing some goodness into the world.”
Alexa PenaVega

Alexa PenaVega, most famous for her role in SPY KIDS (but also a child actor in the 90s), is now spending her career acting in roles on Hallmark and Great American Family. She’s even working behind the scenes and producing wholesome movies with her husband, Carlos PenaVega!
“In this realm of movies that we’re trying to make, there are only a handful of people I feel like trying to make family-friendly content, and the content that’s out there is hard to watch because it’s so cheesy,” PenaVega told Live Action.
“It’s so hard to watch where you’re like, ‘Okay, I know this is appropriate for the whole family, but I also want to watch something good.’ So, a lot of times we end up compromising and going and watching other stuff which is, you know, fine, but it’s not great for your spirit. It’s not great for your kids to, you know, watch stuff that compromises…their values and your belief system,” PenaVega said.
Tamera Mowry-Housley

Last, but certainly not least, Tamera Mowry-Housey first rose to fame in the sitcom SISTER SISTER with her twin sister, Tia Mowry. Even in her adult years, it’s always been important to Mowry-Housley to play roles that are upstanding and morally sound. She enjoys acting in Hallmark movies and is a devout Christian. “Whenever I feel like I’m struggling, lost, uncertain, I go to the Word. I go to the Word of God. And there I find my answers,” Mowry revealed on the Jesus Calling Podcast.
Her strong relationship with God leads her to bring her morals and beliefs into Hollywood through wholesome family content. “There’s just something about a Hallmark movie that warms your heart and I’m beyond excited to be joining the network not just as an actor and executive producer, but more so as a family member,” Mowry-Housley said about joining the Hallmark family. “I can’t wait to share our first original film this holiday season.”
